PRINCESS JULIANA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, St. Maarten, WI- It was about 3:00 P.M. on July 22, 2018 when the Territory’s Champion Basketball Team, BVI Bayside Blazers was waiting for their departure flight from the Princess Juliana International Airport in Dutch St. Maarten, that they got the attention of the Islands’ highest official, His Excellency, Governor Eugene B. Holiday.

His Excellency Holiday is the first Governor of St. Maarten, which became a country (Dutch Island) within the Kingdom of the Netherlands on October 10, 2010. He was installed by the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on September 7, 2010 after being appointed by the Netherlands.

At the Airport he was first introduced to team Manager Julian Willock as they both were heading to the VIP Lounge.

Mr Willock then invited him to pose for a picture with the BVI Championship team.  Governor Holiday quickly accepted the invitation and told the team jokingly they only beat his country because he “was not playing”. The Governor seemed to stand well over six feet tall, but not sure he was any match for the BVI Basketball squad 7.2 footer Akeme A. Smart.

However, he warned the BVI Basketball team that next year he will ensure he is pictured with St. Maarten after they win, which ended with jovial laughter. Mr Willock also told Governor Holiday that with his interesting last name a ‘holiday’ in the BVI should be considered.

The BVI Basketball Team won the Battle of the Fitness Championship for the third time on Saturday July 21, 2018.
