Phone fight lands man in court
Before the charges were read to Garraway however, the prosecutor opted to give a brief account of the allegations since it was explained that the man’s girlfriend did not want to pursue charges against him.
The woman, who shares a young child with the man, was reportedly scheduled to leave the Territory in a few days and told the court the matter was not a serious one.
According to the prosecutor, on March 11, 2014, Garraway was at home with his girlfriend who was visiting from St Vincent when a message came in on his mobile phone. She asked to see the message and he declined, stating that the phone is his personal business. The man allegedly went after her with an umbrella and she put a knife under her pillow after seeing this.
Both parties later explained different versions of the events, with the woman stating that she had wanted to see a picture on the man’s phone and he refused, chasing her with an umbrella after she had grabbed it against his will. She also admitted to picking up a knife to defend herself.
The woman told the court that she was very playful and would sometimes get into trouble for this.
Magistrate John instructed the couple to hug each other in the middle of the courtroom and asked both of them if they loved each other and whether they wanted to continue the relationship. They both agreed that they did.
The charges were dismissed against Garraway.
The Magistrate remarked that technology today is very dangerous and noted that men have no privacy. He commented that many serious disputes between men and women are as a result of today’s technology.
