Phoenix Reds & Just Dream remain undefeated!
Games began on Friday March 1, 2013 in the Women’s Division with Phoenix Black beating the Achievers 3 sets to 2, ( 22-25, 25-14, 25-18, 12-25, 15-12) led by Victoria Washa’s 9 kills and 3 digs. Alison Scatliffe picked up 6 kills and 7 digs whilst for the Achievers Symorne Penn collected 13 kills, 6 digs and 3 aces.
Just Dream then took out the Terminators 3-1, (25-14, 25-22, 19-25, 25-11) with Drexel Glasgow picking up 11 kills and 8 digs. He was supported by Canice Marquese who finished with 7 kills and 6 digs. For the Terminators, Damian Creque notched 10 kills, 6 blocks and 4 digs and Frandy Martin finished with 8 kills, 10 digs and 4 blocks.
The much anticipated game of the weekend between the Phoenix Reds and Phoenix Blue, featuring two of the top names in local Volleyball, Danielle Selkridge and Valissia Brathwaite, was watched by far too few fans, but resulted in a straight forward 3-0 victory to the more experienced Reds.
The Reds controlled the first set, but were never more than 3 points ahead until Tyalia Nibbs produced a delightfully disguised tip over the net to seal the set 25-21.
They then raced into a 4-0 lead in the second set, but it wasn’t until Brathwaite went on an 8 serve run that they took command and ran out 25-12 winners, with Nibbs serving an Ace to wrap it up.
The third set saw Sharonda Pickering hand the Blues a 3-0 lead, but again the Reds came back strong by leveling it at 4-4. The middle section of the set was a battle of attrition with the teams exchanging points for points, but a couple of Selkridge trademark kills seemingly put the Blues in charge at 17-12. An error allowed the Reds back into the game and with a combination of Brathwaite serving and some lethal kills by Sabinah Clement suddenly it was just 17-18 to the Blues. With Clement now serving, the score quickly became 23-20 to the Reds. A foot fault on the Blues serve handed the Reds set and match point.
There was still time for a little drama as the line judge called what seemed the winning point out to make it 24-21, Selkridge smashed a winner to make it 24-22, but then hit another potential winner just out and the game was over at 25-22.
Brathwaite led the Reds with 8 kills, 5 digs and 3 aces whilst Clement finished with 3 kills, 5 digs and 2 aces. For the Blues, Selkridge led the way with 16 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. ; Pickering adding 4 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces.
The Men’s game that followed was also over in straight sets with Raw Power beating Firepower 3 – 0 (25-20, 25-18, 27-25). Leon Smith returned the top stats with 15 kills and 5 digs and Deon Vanterpool added 6 kills and 6 digs.
For Firepower, Curtis Davis finished with 4 kills, 5 digs and 3 aces.
On Sunday, Phoenix Red continued their winning ways with a straight sets victory over Phoenix Black, (25-11, 25-23, 25-18). Brathwaite hit 11 kills, 5 digs and 1 ace followed up by Clements’ 7 kills, 7 digs and 2 aces.
For Phoenix Black, Washa recorded 3 kills and 9 digs with Scatliffe also notching 3 kills.
The weekend concluded with Just Dream overpowering Raw Power 3 – 0, (25–15, 25–16, 25–18) courtesy of Travis Jack’s 5 Kills, 2 Blocks and 1 Dig. Willis Potter recorded 5 Kills, 3 Blocks and 3 Aces, whilst for Raw Power Smith hit 13 Kills with 6 Digs and Vanterpool 5 Kills, 6 Digs and 2 Aces.
The weekends results meant that Phoenix Red are still unbeaten with a 6-0 record, second are the Blues at 3-2, third Achievers at 1-4, fifth Raw Power with a 1-2 record and sixth Phoenix Black at 1-6.
In the Men’s, Just Dream have 6 wins from 6, second are the Terminators at 2 -2, third are the Gunx at 2 -1, fourth Raw Power at 2 -4 and fifth the winless Fire Power with a 0 -5 record.
