Phillip Sisters heading to Scottish Nationals
VI swimming sisters, Amarah and Elinah, hope to cop several prizes and maybe set another national record or two when they represent the BVI at both the upcoming Scottish Nationals and the Carifta Games in April 2014. The girls are also currently gearing up for their debut appearance on the international swimming competition circuit on July 23 to August 3, 2014 at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
At Glasgow, fifteen year-old Amarah will compete in the 50m and 100m Butterfly and the 50m Freestyle having emerged from the latter half of 2013 as a confident sprint fly swimmer with strong ability in her events.
This year, much attention will be focused on younger sister, Elinah, who has developed into England’s second fastest 2000 born girl in the 50m Freestyle sprint and the third fastest in the 50m Butterfly. Elinah is now one of only three thirteen year-old girls who have gone under the 28 second mark on the 50m freestyle long course. The young sprint star is expected to also compete in the 2014 British National Age Group Championships.
Both Amarah and Elinah train between six to seven times in the water and also complete a further three land sessions per week.
“We’re very excited for the girls,” says proud father and BVI Swim Federation President Elsworth Phillip. “We think they both have an excellent chance to do very well at all their competitions this year. They are both extremely dedicated and the coaches at Hatfield are very pleased and excited about their prospects.”
The sisters racked up an impressive series of wins at the 23rd OECS Swimming Championships held last November in St Lucia where Elinah won 10 medals and collected the OECS high point award in the girls 11-12 age group. She also established five new OECS records in the Girls 11-12 age group. Elinah’s records came in the 50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle, 50 Butterfly, 100 Butterfly and 200 Individual Medley. Meanwhile, Amarah won six medals in the 13-14 age group and copped the 3rd place high point award in that age group.
The Scottish Nationals will be held from April 3, to 6, 2014 at the same venue as the Commonwealth Games while the Carifta Games will be held from the April 19 to 21, 2014 in Aruba.
