ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- History was created for Team BVI at the 23rd OECS Swimming Championships in St Lucia at the weekend as the young swimmers captured 16 medals, including 9 gold medals and 5 OECS records.

The Championships were held from November 8 to November 10, 2013 at the Rodney Heights Aquatic Complex.

Elinah Phillip won 10 medals and the OECS high point award in the girls 11-12 age group. She also established 5 new OECS records in the Girls 11-12 age group.

Phillip records came in the 50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle, 50 Butterfly, 100 Butterfly and 200 Individual Medley.

Amarah Phillip won 6 medals in the 13-14 age group and copped the 3rd place high point award in that age group.

The 16-medal haul included 9 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze medals. The girls’ team placed 4th overall while the boys placed 5th. The junior boys made their inaugural appearance in the 200 medley and freestyle relays placing 4th and 5th respectively.

The team established several national records and several personal best swims. The usually well attended event highlighted emerging talent in the region with swimmers from the [British] Virgin Islands posting Carifta qualifying marks in a number of events.

It was the VI's 4th appearance at the event which is in its 23rd year. The event will now include open water swimming from next year and the BVI Swimming Federation (BVISF) hopes to be able to field a team including open water swimmers at next year’s meet.

The team was made up of Jaden Marshal, Nicole Munro, Dominic Munro, Lawton Green, Bradford Green, Giselle Archibald- Bowers, Amarah Phillip and Elinah Phillip. National Coach, Elsworth C. Phillip and President of the BVI Swimming Federation, Verne Wheatley also accompanied the team.

The BVISF again extends appreciation to its sponsors and parents who made participation at the Championships possible. Sponsors include Drakes Traders, VI National Bank, Oyster Global Marketing, Maples and Calder, Bitter End Yacht Club, Yates and Associates, BCQS, BVI Olympic Committee, KPMG, Kenny Tee’s, ACE Properties and Peter Island Resort.

Government need to invest in these kids not your pool. As far as I understand all these swimmers are on Tortola with the exception of the Phillip sisters who are now based in the UK. No offense but that's where I think government should make their investment...I am sure most would agree that these kids and their family should have government support on this journey as they develop to become sports ambassadors for the BVI. Do you see how proudly our flag is being displayed on the winners stand? I to feel like a winner just seeing how we were represented.

Kudos to team BVI. They say not a penny was contributed by the government nor the department of youth and sports but they were promised some sort of funding. What a thing! ONLY IN THE BVI. We need to stop playing games around here. MVW you need to get swimming into the schools. You have two more years

Pure lip service, they have no real interest in this or any other sport, it's obvious! Congratulations to the COACHES, PARENTS, SPONSORS and SUPPORTERS who made it happen for the swimmers.

Elinah & Amarah we at the Joyce Samuel Primary School are so proud of your achievements, seems like it was just yesterday that you all were students of ours, so young, bright and talented. I hope that our government would recognize your talents and invest in your you both. This is a no brainier for me. We are so proud of you both.
