Philip sisters qualify for Carifta Swimming Championships

- VI to be represented for the first time at the C/ships
Elinah and Amara Phillip will represent the Virgin Islands at the upcoming Carifta Swimming Championships in the Bahamas
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Philip sisters, Elinah and Amarah, have qualified for the Carifta Swimming Championships, where the Virgin Islands will be represented for the first time ever.

The 2012 Carifta Swimming Championships will be held from April 12 to 15, 2012 at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatic Centre in Nassau, Bahamas.

According to the British Virgin Islands Swimming Federation (BVISF), it has adopted the recommendations of the National coaches based on qualifying standards having being met and the territory will be represented by 13-year old Amarah Phillip and 11-year old Elinah Phillip.

It also said, in preparation for the event, the swimmers attended warm up competitions in St. Croix (Dolphins Invitational March 10-11) and Puerto Rico (Manati Invitational March 24-25). The final warm up event concluded last weekend at the Marlins of Manati Invitational. At both competitions the swimmers were finalists and medallist.

It was also noted that the competitions were held in Olympic sized pools, which are 50 metres in length, and the swimmers had previously never competed in a pool that size and those competitions served as introductions to facilities similar to those in the Bahamas.

National swim coaches Elsworth Phillip and Tracy Bradshaw, who selected the team of two to represent the territory, agree that the team is small but the swimmers are strong and determined and so good results can be expected from them.

“This is their first meet at Carifta, and at that level, as one might know you go to a meet for the first time the results might not be as encouraging as the second time which always seems to be better, for example comparing their results at their first OECS Championships to their second appearance. They have been swimming pretty good times when compared to other swimmers in the region so we basically think that they will at least improve on all the National Records that they have established thus far,” Elsworth Phillip told Virgin Islands News Online.

The BVI Swimming Federation wishes to thank the BVI Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Education for funding the team to the Carifta Swimming Championships.

It's nice to see this Government public surporting swimming in the territory, unlike the past Goverment. Congratulation to the sisters, our version of the williams sisters in tennis. I know they will do very well.
