ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- As promised, Phase 2 of the Virgin Islands' Economic Response Plan to COVID-19 will be unveiled today, May 28, 2020, by Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1).

The plan will be delivered in a live address to the Territory by the Premier at 8:00 pm, according to a press release from the Department of Information and Public Relations.

"Under the theme ‘Social Protection and Economic Stimulation in COVID-19’, the Premier will present the immediate relief and short-term economic response measures from which the public will benefit at this time," the press release stated.

Top economic priorities

According to Premier Fahie, "In this ‘New Regular’ of living and working with COVID-19, assisting persons in need; saving jobs; boosting the economic activity from which businesses can benefit; and, encouraging local spending and savings are the top economic priorities at this very challenging time for many.”

He said, “This COVID-19 pandemic is fluid, and although here in the BVI we currently have no active cases, and we thank God, we must never become complacent as we are not out of the woods and must, therefore, ensure that our plan remains flexible and do not compromise the future advancement of our people and this Territory.”

Premier Fahie added, “I look forward to presenting the second phase of Government's plans to bring economic relief and support to the people and businesses of these Virgin Islands."

The Economic Response Plan was already approved in principle by the Cabinet of the Virgin Islands to guide the Government’s short, medium and long term economic, fiscal and social response to the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus on the Virgin Islands.

Phase one of the plan has already been activated.

The public is invited to view the live simulcast on the Government of the Virgin Islands’ Facebook page @BVIGovernment or on Flow TV Channel 101 or via radio on ZBVI 780 AM or CBN Radio 90.9 FM.
