ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has blasted certain residents for attempting to pressure various District Representatives and deceive Family Support Network (FSN) to get more food and vouchers.

Premier Fahie said some persons went as far as using wigs to disguise themselves to commit the acts.

“We have seen persons who we gave the voucher try to play other representatives to get another voucher. And, we see some of them want to play on you because you are the Representative and they say ‘you have to help me because I voted for you,’" he said on Thursday, April 16, 2020, during the Seventh Sitting of the Second Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) at Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duffs Bottom, Tortola.

He continued: “While all of us as politicians may want to banter to it, this is not one you could put a life over an X, rather we should call it a dash, versus an X," explaining that the safety and wellbeing of the people should be put first.

Disguise for food

Premier Fahie said there were some residents who were not satisfied by the portions they received from FSN.

“Up to yesterday the Family Support Network that has an account at One Mart Supermarket, they run up the amount. I told them to go right ahead and take up all the food and get it to the people. And we have seen persons who have already got food from the Family Support Network left and come back in other clothes, with a wig to get more food,” he stated.

The Government teamed up with the FSN, a charitable organisation, to distribute food and other supplies to families in need during the 24-hour lockdown, which ends on April 19, 2020.

Picture ID's and phone numbers should be shown at all times, so no matter what the person looks like in their get ups, their names are the same. This is downright disgusting what some low lives will do for greed.

Is this hearsay or real talk? Are people behaving this way because they are greedy or needy? Many people have been out of work for weeks and struggling to make ends meet. Is not political patronage a way of life in the VI, as well as other regional countries, especially Anglophone countries? By the way, why was this taken to the Honorable HOA? Was it a slow day in the HOA.

Some played the politicians and got several vouchers. Some even tried using the names of people who are not living here anymore. Sad sick.set of people. And still went to FSN and Red Cross at different locations and collect. There were households where every family member got vouchers while some humble persons spent their dollar the best they could and never asked for assistance. God sees all

You are very correct. We continue to import liabilities via work permit. It is not the fault of the expatriates, it is the fault of those who claim to employ them.

The family support delivery’s needs the do much better... the amount of food giving out is simply too little.!!! I live around four other neighbors and one which is taking care of there child... The last delivery we got was basically one Bag,, and the rice poured out in a zip lock bag only enough for a days cooking... an don’t even get me started on the amount of calling multiple numbers just to get in contact.!!!! Bottom line is, I didn’t even get anything.!! Don’t Bother.!!

This comment right here hurts me to the core. Prior to the lockdown, the government advised persons to shop for three days. Subsequently, lifted the curfew for persons to shop to stock up for 14 days. If you had planned and shopped accordingly you would never had to contact FSN for food. The problem here is that people (locals/expats) feel as though they are entitled to and for agencies such as FSN and Red Cross to be out during a challenging time like this you should SHUT UP and say thank you. Your attitude, behavior and comments is what forces these agencies to close due to the ungratefulness. Persons who received the same packages I am sure was grateful as they were on their last and hand nothing. Evidently, you did not need to call and/or take their food, because it appears that you had. I think you should apologize, get on your knees and pray and ask God for forgiveness. Their people who are out there that really need unlike you. I am so a shame of you and I know you are a parent with children.

You live in the BVI right; you the wages/salaries of some people right?. Lots of people after they shopped for the first 5 days simply did not have the funds to shop for another 14 days especially after being out of work for so long. It's unfortunate that some abuse the system; there are dishonest people all over. However it does not take away from the fact that many simply could not have afforded to sustain themselves during this time

This is very shameful and disgusting, but rest assure, there are persons like that in these Virgin Islands, even when there's normalcy in the Territory. I'm not overly concerned about over the world. I'm talking of the country I live in.

I also heard some went to FSN, got stuff then ask friends to go for specific things. Advantage will never finish but we get what we allow. The amount of people I saw at both FSN and the red cross, I refuse to believe the BVI has so much people needing that level of assistance. I was wondering if the same people went to both places. If so much people need that kind of help then we need to take a serious census because only a small percentage of the residents are self-sufficient.

Does the Red Cross and FSN have that amount of supply to hand out again if another curfew is warranted.
