LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI- The National Democratic Party (NDP) has been working overtime to get a full slate of candidates to contest the April 24, 2023, General Elections in the Virgin Islands (VI) and they have eyes on former Water and Sewerage Department (W&SD) Director Mrs Perline R. Scatliffe-Leonard to fill the slot for the Seventh District.

NDP trying to capture Independent candidates

On Wednesday night, March 15, 2023, one of the NDP’s Territorial At Large candidates, Dr Kedrick D. Pickering, teamed up with Independent candidate Scatliffe-Leonard to hold a public meeting at The Stickit in Long Look where he endorsed Mrs Scatliffe-Leonard but also made it known he wants her to join the NDP.

“Don’t mind Perline running as an Independent, Perline is going to work with me, I will wring her hand a little [to] see if she is going to join the NDP but she isn’t coming yet, but don’t matter what happens, I with Perline and Perline with me,” Dr Pickering, who was defeated by now Premier Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley for the Seventh District seat in the 2019 general elections, declared.

Recycling of candidates

So far, the NDP has been recycling most of their candidates who were rejected in the 2019 elections, including the controversial former Education Minister Myron V. Walwyn, former Elmore Stoutt High School Principal Sandy M. Harrigan-Underhill and Aaron F. Parillon.

Perline’s predicament

Scatliffe-Leonard’s biggest task has been to convince the public that she would be more effective as a representative than she was as Water and Sewerage Department boss, as it has been far from impressed with her performance there.

Dr Pickering, nevertheless, pleaded with the D7 constituents to vote for Scatliffe-Leonard.

“You elect Perline as the representative for the Seventh District and every one of you who registered in the Seventh District I begging you for your vote. I don’t care whether you are NDP, VIP, PVIM, I don’t care who you are, you know me and I know you, I begging every single person who is registered in the Seventh District for your vote.”

Scatliffe-Leonard thanked Dr Pickering for his endorsement but did not give any indication as to whether she has any intentions of entering talks with the NDP at this time.

Political pundits are; however, confident Scatliffe-Leonard will align herself with the NDP.

If slowman even win the seat he will not be in cabinet so not even a back benched but an outsider.

you know the answer to your question. If he was indeed the premier would your district be in the state it is in? To me that is more than enough reason.

Clearly the NDP and others have no confidence in Marlon as a leader and so should we. Lorna launched as an independent candidate and that spoke volumes of her lack of respect and confidence in the NDP leader. Now they got her to switch and join NDP, but we all know this is a marriage of connivence to try to save face with a month before elections. Also, Marlon cannot field a full slate which demonstrates his lack of ability to lead as Kedrick also started independent but now switched and joined NDP. Pearline started independent and now Marlon is trying to get her to switch and trying to make us believe that even if she doesn't, they are working together. Marlon is also telling the people in the 1st District that the independent candidate Chad is with the NDP so vote for him. The guy has loss it. It is clear that Marlon is a weak leader and needs to take a break from politics. One thing for sure, is that if he and others happen to win, they will not allow him to be premier and they shouldn't.

I concur with you and therefore hastily endorse this post. If ndp wins it is Myron or picko for premier. Top two positions. Marlon would have to settle for a minister pick. Worst yet if two parties come together to form government he might not be included.

@ Facts to Consider, I agreed with you 10000%. The big question is, who elected Marlon the leader of the NDP and when/where did that election take place. If by the stroke of any misfortune the NDP wins. Myron, Lorna and Kedrick will never sit there and allow Marlon to lead them.

Simply put, Kedrick wants revenge on Natalio for defeating him last election. He has not gotten over it.

If he wanted revenge it would have been served cold had he run in the district. Natalio won because of Diago. He get everything by default.

I don't understand why she would line up herself with Dr. Pickering/NDP. He is only using her to get the All he only at-large votes. Them all about political-tricks. He was going to support her 100% but now doubting it.

People it matters who you put into office. When we vote it shouldn’t be about individual benefits but the territory on a whole. I would try to tell anyone who to elect but that person should have a track record of success, sincere care and respect for fellow citizens and humility. One water and sewage employee said to me that some employees need therapy having dealt with that woman.

So she has so many issues with the district and not an issue with how he represented the district for 20 years?

FDLOL...that is a good one and it is factual. A set of hypocrites. Kedrick was the D7 rep for 20yrs and did nothing for the people nor district but want Natalio to fix it all in 4 years while dealing with Covid and the damages from Irma and Maria. Their logic makes no sense.

Pearline Scatliffe has been at the helm of Water and Sewage for many years what has she achieved? This is still one of major concerns of the country. I find it hard to believe that she will be truly effective.

Perline will make a great fit! She spoke with so much more passion and sense than the current 7th district rep. I am praying for her success at the polls and her working with the NDP party.
