ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Following the lastest COVID-19 positive case in a resident with no recent travel history, authorities are buckling down to tackle illegal entry and people smuggling into the Virgin Islands, as the government takes steps to protect its citizens and remain in control of the coronavirus pandemic.

This move was hinted by Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) during a COVID-19 update last evening, August 19, 2020.

"We strongly urge all members of the public to bring to the attention of the relevant authorities – whether Police, Customs or Immigration - any suspicion or evidence of people smuggling into the Territory," Hon Malone said.

"Illegal entry provides an avenue for COVID-19 to enter and spread among our community," the Minister further underscored.

Illegal entry under the microscope

On a Monday, August 17, 2020, during the previous COVID-19 update, the Minister had announced that the government was cognizant of possible illegal entry, however, the latest COVID-19 case may have confirmed those suspicions.

"If this is so my simple advice is STOP! It is dangerous! It is wrong! It could bring harm to the territory," Hon Malone said during the broadcast.

Forces have since been mobilised via a Joint Task Force comprising Customs, Immigration and Police Officers that help guard against illegal entry, he said on Monday.

"This is why we must remain vigilant, continue to take a cautious approach to social and economic activity, and thoughtfully engage with the world around us, out of care and concern for our community," Hon Malone said.

The Chinese have been wearing masks for years, yet the “virus“ started with them. So obviously the masks don’t work. Let’s argue

Kudos to the government for their efforts so far - but everyone is an amateur in these circumstances .

While you are changing the legislation to sanction the public and business owners for not observing protocols - please have the imagination and the Cahoooooonas to innovate and be firm.

VOVID is unprecedented . Smuggling in these times is an offense against the goddam state.
These are offenses against the crown, territory and national security as should be treated as such.

Please change the laws to punish ANY mofo who breached these waters with MANDATORY 25 YEAR sentences , impossible TO PAY FINES and confiscation / forfeiture of ALL @&!/@&& Personal ASSETS to the crown.

Grow an executive pair. Thanks you

    Step up and LEAD

The "New Case" need some serious investigating into. School children say that the individual is involved in "extra-curriculum activities".

@ Lipidee, I agree with you 100%. I would too would make them suffer and go to prison for a very very long time. This is Bullshit endangering our lives, while the government is trying their best to protect us. If I see any new faces, I will take their picture and give it to Mr. Malone, because I don't trust some of these cops.

You have to be joking. Go fast boats come and go every day from west end to USVI. Been happening all summer. Police have one boat that barely runs, customs the same. There is no task force. What we have is a lot of corrupt officials taking money to look the other way.

Agreed. Maybe they should be spending money on some proper boats for the police and customs rather than sticking a few trees up and paying for an underground carpark

More expats needed to monitor the borders. Is our own people that doing the smuggling. Sad thing, many of the ministers know of them because they have aided in the smuggling themselves...directly or indirectly.

Maybe allow people to come in legally, then there won’t be the need for the illegals.

Problem is, them boats been going in and out for years and they get away with it because they making CASH.
Once you making cash, you control law enforcement because in one minute you can pay an officer what they'd get in one year or more.
$$ is just pieces of paper to them boat guys.
Covid or not, that's how the BVI works.
It has contaminated us for decades, but now its putting us all in danger.
Solutions? Tough, but right that navy ship should make itself useful, imho.

The police needs to get from behind the desk and do a proper investigation into this last case. It's big business smuggling persons on the waters.

maybe need to look at boats from USVI rocking up at willy t. I see lotta USVI people on social media turning up there and nobody stopping the boats coming over. Get that you cant police all the seas but it aint the biggest stretch of water to stick a few police boats in

The big question is , does the BVI government really want to stop drug smuggling? It’s very good business for us, brings lots of cash into the country, and we have no real hard drug problem here. My opinion is that they do not.
