BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Former Deputy Premier Dr Kedrick D. Pickering has said there is a need to put policies in place that will result in an environment where individual ideas can flourish into businesses that can push the local economy forward.

“We have to find ways of encouraging all persons to get creative about doing their business. How do we piggyback on other businesses? How do we piggyback on other ideas? If you're going to move forward, we've got to have new ideas of doing things,” he said.

Dr Pickering was at the time a guest on the Monday, February 6, 2023, edition of Umoja hosted by Cromwell Smith aka Ed Ju Enka on ZBVI 780AM where he added that someone running for office should not necessarily have all the ideas, rather, policies should be in place to foster ideas in the VI.

“What we've got to do is create an environment where people's ideas can flourish, then the other pieces will then come with it. But if you have a good idea, we've got to find ways of helping people to bring those ideas to fruition, because that's what generates the wealth that you're looking for,” he added.

No politician has all the answers - Dr Pickering

Dr Pickering said a person running for public office does not necessarily have to have a specific idea of how things are supposed to be done, rather, the government must be able to put a policy in place to foster ideas, along with tapping into local resources of those who have ideas.

“You see, one of the problems that we face is that because as soon as somebody said they were running for elected office, they must have all the ideas. That is what is keeping us back.”

Dr Pickering added that moving forward, the VI must find ways to help local people who have ideas to bring those ideas to fruition. He said this can be started by putting people in the right places within the public sector.

“So persons, for instance in government, we must have a civil service that is functional, we must have a civil service that is going to do their job...” he said.

Why don't you just get from on the dark side side and come back to the Almighty Creator side. You don't have any ideas until you get the script and this should prove it. If I was going into Power of course I would know what All I had to do without hearing what anyone need to say. You can see Where all the stolen money went so I would clean up all the sellout. All government officials would loose their house unless they can prove how they paid for it plus all business. Most businesses in the BVI is built off the tax payers money and you go into their stores and pay for things. I support no one who does This

That’s not true Sir. We expect you to listen to the ideas of the people. The regular man on the street sometimes has the best idea over the so called experts. But often times he gets ignored. Just mingle with the people, talk with them, laugh with them, let them know they are important and then when you get back to sit in the chair they put you in, act on their behalf, in their best interest. Happy people = beautiful, peaceful flourishing Virgin Islands. Simple!

Wait a freaking minute! You had a multitude of years to find the answers. You act as though this is the first time you are running. My goodness man, stop taking us for a bunch of arses! Good ideas years ago were given to you and you shot them down, Now I see politicians coming out with the same ideas as if they are new now. I'm fed up with you all mumbo jumbo so-called elected officials.

I guess the idea to clean your community never crossed your mind? Not even after 20 years in office could an idea like that came across your mind? Seriously, go tend to your patients and leave the politics to the true politicians. Your rich friend will not find any open doors in our home through you!

First of all, when you’re elected to government, there’s a reasonable expectation of leadership. That means coming up with ideas, evaluating them, deciding on them, and taking action. If the expectation of having one’s own ideas (beyond self enrichment) is too burdensome, ask those who voted you in, and consider what they have to say. Perhaps Picko should have thought about that when he was in office. What exactly was his record of achievement then? How did the community that elected him benefit from his actions?
