ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Sanya Penn and J’Maal Alexander romped to victories in the 100 and 200m as eleven athletes pulled off doubles and several more ran personal bests performances in the final Gatorade Development Series meet on Saturday March 3, 2012.

Tynelle Gumbs set the ball rolling, though, in the Field events as she increased her 2-year Under 17 Girls Javelin Throw best from 25.90m (85’0”) to 28.37, (96’6”) solidifying her position as No. 3 on the all time list. She followed up with another personal best heave of 10.35m (33’11½”) in the Shot Put - climbing from No.9 to No. 5 on the Territory’s all time career list.

Also in the Field events, her teammate Eldred Henry had two personal best throws of 13.27m in the Shot Put, before flinging the U20 Boys 1.75K Discus out to 45.08m - another lifetime best.

Jonel Lacey chopped 1.25 seconds off her 300m Hurdles best of 45.54 seconds from her last outing, stopping the clock at 44.29. The fastest ever time recorded by a VI athlete over the distance. Deya Erickson also ran a 48.27 best. Lacey finished ahead of Erickson in the 100m Hurdles16.55-16.65 into a -3.0mps headwind.

On the front end of his season’s third sprint double, J’Maal Alexander shaved 1/100 off his National Scholastic Record into a -1.3 meters per second breeze, when he ran the 200m in 21.68 seconds, eclipsing the 21.69 he ran in St. Kitts on April 10, 2011. The athlete completed his sprint double with a 10.94 seconds run in century, facing a -2.4 mps headwind.

Other sprint doubles on the evening came from: Nelda Huggins in the U17 Girls 100/200m with runs of 12.34 and 25.09, into a -2.5mps.

Tarique Moses completed an 800/400m double with season’s best marks of 2:01.46 and 50.88 respectively. Zahkaria Frett had an U13 Girls 200/400m double in 28.08/1:05.30 and Abriel Solomon recorded an U9 Girls 80/150m double with times of 13.54 and 25.69.

Tashara Edwards equaled the feat in the U11 Girls 80/150m with times of 13.14 and 22.59. Koen Penn won the U11 Boys 80 and 150m in 11.51 and 22.18.

Despite an injured ankle, Sanya Penn ran to win in the 100 and 200m with times of 12.29 and 25.42.She has every chance of attaining the Olympic qualifying time of 23.20 or better in the 200 metres, with a little more dedication and focus.
