ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host Doug Wheatley has decried the fact that the Peebles Hospital reportedly lack the facilities to carry out certain procedures such as colonoscopies which can help to detect colon cancer.

He was speaking last evening October 27, 2015 on his Speak Out BVI show aired on ZBVI 780 AM during which he addressed several issues, including those to do with National Health Insurance (NHI) and others.

Mr Wheatley said that he has listened to Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton and noted that the Minister is very much committed to health, even noting that the Minister has had his own health challenges. “But Government policy has not always shown the same commitment,” said Wheatley.

“If in fact a colonoscopy can detect colon cancer and polyps and prevent it, why doesn’t the Peebles Hospital have the facilities for carrying out a colonoscopy? My understanding is that they do not have the facilities for that and that you have to go to a private establishment in order to have a colonoscopy and it could cost you anything like $1,000,” he said.

Wheatley noted that if this is the only cancer that can be detected beforehand then why isn’t the facility available at the people’s hospital which is the Peebles Hospital. “And this is not just under Honourable Skelton’s watch but during previous governments as well. And up to today as far as I know we still don’t have the services of the colonoscopy at the hospital,” he said.

He noted too that while he knows the hospital has a machine to do mammograms, there should be at least another machine in case one is down. He called also for there to be a redundancy for CT scans.

“In a hospital that cost $160 million we should not be in a situation where A. we cannot afford to have an extra machine in the eventuality in case one breaks down, or we don’t seem to have a maintenance schedule so that when there is a problem with a machine if we don’t have the personnel on island we can bring them in and get the repairs done so that such a machine can be up and running for the benefit of the people of these islands.”

Wheatley is of the view that if the country does not have the facilities to take care of the primary needs of its people then that is the first thing that must be addressed before there can be any inkling of having a National Health Insurance scheme.

“We must have the adequate facilities at the hospital and that could be augmented or supplemented by the private institutions. But I fail to see how it is that private institutions could have more advanced equipment than our Peebles Hospital,” said Wheatley.

He noted that having early diagnosis in some cases can lead to early treatment and sustained life, which will not be the case when the disease is detected in the late stages.

Mr Wheatley are you going to foot the bill; the people them try to set up NHI to help offset the high operational cost at the hospital and you and your cronies went postal NOW you here asking for a very expensive service to be added to the hospital; I am convinced that you guys don't think and I am also convinced that you are one of those persons that espects the government should pay for everything but population have grown since the 60s therefore the cost of health care has gone up.... talk is really cheap

Trust me, they would not purchase the necessary machinery from the monies collected from the NHI. At any rate the hospital would have cost a lot less if both parties opted not to play political foot-ball with it.

@wizeup. With all due respect your post clearly contradicts your blogging name as you are obviously clueless to what is going on here. The monies paid into the NHI will be used mainly to for current costs eg. claims and then we have to deal with the debt of the capital cost and maintain the day to day operations of the hospital.. Now that is a lot of money we talking and I am very doubtful that they will have much money left after dealing with the claims, but miracles do happen.

Additionally what Mr. Wheatley is suggesting that the NHI is basically cart before horse mentality. We do not have the capacity, competency or capability to deal with the influx of patients due to the NHI but we implementing the NHI. He also stated clearly that we have spent 160 million (not sure if this figure is correct but if it is Lord help us)and clearly we have not gotten value for money. So why should we put more money when we are yet to find out what happened to the money already expended?

I can't take these people seriously. Out one corner of their mouth, No to NHI. And out the other corner, the hospital should have blah blah blah. I mean, come on. Can we get some medical professionals to speak on this issue and not those who are outside of this field of expertise?

The people of the BVI have been taken for a ride with the monies spent to construct this new hospital building. I can remember hearing during the campaign about a $100mil hospital signed in 2007 by the NDP to be built for $64mil by the Santo Company. Also a $45mil loan to help buy the needed equipment but that went south also because all the money had to go back into the construction/someone's pocket. Now NHI so we can pay for a 3rd time for this heist of the people's money. Somebody has to pay for this abuse of public funds but as usual NDP are saints so nothing happens once its them.

Completely agree with no good, but it will never happen. No one is ever brought to account on matters such as these. And, yes, it is shameful. I don't know how these people look at themselves in the mirror everyday, let alone go to church on Sundays.

Time for these ministers of government to understand that they work for the people of these islands and must be accountable to us and not the other way around. They are dictating to us what must be and it is time to stop them. An investigation is needed in some of the things they are doing. NHI, some of the road works, airport and more. We want our voices heard. They have some people brain washed but not all of us.That blogger who feels we do not need such machine in our hospital has to be illeiterate.

I second what is being suggested for up front with greater health care system by adding provention, early detectio
n with more modern medical equipment and bringing on medical specialist on board. This will assist the hospital to keep revenue at home, giving communities the quality care for successful health care in Tortola future health care advancement in the
