Patient did not die while ‘waiting’ for health care - Bishop John I. Cline
According to reports reaching Virgin Islands News Online, Valda Stewart fondly known as 'Annette', 48, a native of Dominica, died on Monday June 20, 2016 while at the territory’s lone hospital.
Reports on two online news sites are that the woman was made to wait for 'hours' after arriving at the hospital with chest pains and subsequently died before she could have been attended to.
Infact, a close family friend of Stewart, who had accompanied her and Stewart's mother to the hospital, told Virgin Islands News Online that the woman had to be taken into the facility in a wheel chair and it was conveyed to the personel at the registration booth that the woman was having difficulties breathing.
"They still took all the time and register her and put her in the waiting area. They did not take her in right away although they were told she was not breathing properly. It was hours after she started to collapse that they rushed to her. And when they started inserting the tube down her throat it wasn't going down because she had done start stiffening out on them," said the upset family friend.
Patient did not die while 'waiting'- John I. Cline
According to Mr Cline, the patient did not die while waiting for medical attention.
"To say the patient died while waiting, I don't think that's accurate. What I know is that the patient died in the emergency but to say the patient died in the waiting room I don't think that's accurate," said Cline in a brief interview with Virgin Islands News Online this morning, June 22, 2016.
Cline said that upon learning of the case he immediately went to the institution where he was briefed even as an active thorough investigation is in effect and it was then he was informed that the patient died during the course of receiving care.
The Chairman said that he could not disclose any further information since he is awaiting a full report which is likely to be in his hands by tomorrow June 23.
He, however, confirmed that the person was an adult female whose life ended while receiving care at the emergency unit at Peebles Hospital.

Good Lord man, your statement makes the whole situation even worse. So basically you have to get to the hospital and practically drop dead before they will look at you...but we will stick a tube down your throat and do CPR so that we can say, with a clear conscience "she died while receiving treatment." Pathetic.
The hospital has done good things, and for those things the hospital should be commended. But when your service is lacking , OWN IT & FIX IT! Stop trying to sweep things under the rug and stop using word play to create confusion. You are a health care facility, not the labour department! Ignoring someone at labour means you get a work permit late. Ignoring someone at the hospital can KILL. Get your head out the sand, stop the spin and address the real issues!
On another note, it also depends on who you meet working there. Some persons actually do try to help as best they could. I wish they were all that way.
He knocked at the emergency room door and was told: Wait! He knocked 2 more times within an hour. Same answer. When they finally came looking for him, he sat in his chair - DEAD! Leaving behind a loving young wife (a nurse) and 2 very small children. Valda was cooking on Saturday for the Church and was in great spirit - as she always was. May her soul rest in peace. Sympathy to her family
I was there on Sunday and someone came in with breathing problems they placed her in a wheel chair and took her straight do be dealt with while her friend registered her.
Pastor Cline stop chatting fart!!!!
Police need to review the camera because there's one at nurse desk.....they can see what's going on in the waiting room......unless they erase that part. How long after she got to the hospital was she attended to.
LORD HAVE MERCY! !!! Condolences to that family! !
My empty protest that the service or attention at pebbles emergency room only serves to prove to the public-at-large that the triage system does not work/ is not effective.
What was sadly ironic is that there was a large sign posted in the waiting room explaining Triage-edification for the presently suffering.
I think it was removed but it clearly let ppl know that they were not receiving the Level of service/attention described in said Triage process.
Ppl need not only qualifications. They need to demonstrate good conscience in all undertakings, stand up for what is fair and decent. Be honest about pebbles and its shortcomings, for national pride, arrogance nor inflexibility will not save the bvi.
TELL US WHERE SHE DIED THEN CLINE
When the woman came in and she said what the problem was, did the person at front desk use common sense and let the emergency room know there is someone in serious need of medical attention? Chest pain, dizzy, shortness of breath, stomach pain, allergic reactions is serious.
