Parking & other logistics top priority – PR Lynette L. Harrigan
This announcement was released recently by the Public Relations Officer of the BVI Festivals and Fairs Committee Ms Lynette L. Harrigan who during an exclusive interview with the Virgin Islands News Online stated that among the many strategic plans for the ‘first time’ style of launch, parking, safety and security logistics are top priority.
The theme for the celebrations is, “With cultural class, VI let’s play mass!”
“We know that with what we have planned, and it’s is really big, persons are going to be concerned about parking, that is major but we have that well-arranged and we are working with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force to ensure that we have all the logistic well in place,” said Ms Harrigan.
She said because it was the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Emancipation Festival in the Virgin Islands, she is confident this year is going to be very impactful given its significance, even though there were some significant cuts and changes as unlike the past fifty nine years.
“We are putting our all into this. We are bringing Krosfyah band which along with our locals, VI Showtime, the Xtreme band, Razor Blades all backed by DJ Dre its sure to be a block party to remember,” she assured.
The launch block party will be held along the stretch of road between Bobby's and Scotiabank in Road Town and while no parking will be allowed on the side from Bobby’s to the BVI Tourist Board Office, parking provisions are in place on the opposite side where there are established parking lots.
“From the stretch where the BVI Taxi association stand is all the way down to the Village Cay area and other regular parking areas that are around will be accessible for parking,” noted Ms Harrigan.
In addition to the music, foods, drinks and other side attractions PRO Harrigan said that provisions are being put in place for children’s entertainment. Also in a move to have as many persons sign up for the various troupes for the festival, troupe leaders will be on spot with sample costumes to attract participants.
“We want as many persons to register with the various groups so on that day, March 22, the various troupe leaders are going to be out with copies of their costumes so persons can see what to expect and decide which troupe they are going to be joining,” Ms Harrigan explained.
She was also high in praise for the overwhelming support the committee has been getting from the private sector for the launch block party. According to Ms Harrigan as opposed to charging the committee a fee to provide certain services, quite a number of private entrepreneurs, especially locals, have committed to doing volunteer services.
“It’s amazing the support that we are getting this year for things that we would usually have to pay for and we are most pleased about this. It shows that our business people recognize the significance of especially this year being our 60th and they are really coming through for us,” she stated.
PRO Harrigan said that as the days draw closer to the launch the committee is going to be in frequent communication with the public to provide relevant information as it relates especially to the logistics including the times for the opening and closing of certain roads.
