Gold medal Chef

This one-stop restaurant and bakeshop is owned and operated by the gold-medal award winning Professional Chef Macgarvey Thompson, who has represented the Virgin Islands at several international competitions as part of the country’s National Culinary Team; and his wife Dr Arlene L. Smith-Thompson, who is an educator by profession and currently serves as the Vice President of Academic Affairs at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.

History of Mac's Restaurant

The Thompsons, who were married in 2010, grasped an opportunity to operate a small café in 2012 at the Energy Centre in Duff’s Bottom. Chef Mac or Mac as he is popularly called, felt it was an opportune time to venture back into the restaurant industry after taking a hiatus for a few years to upgrade his pastry-making skills at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu Institute in Florida. His long-time customers welcomed his return, while he gained a new generation of culinary patrons!

In 2013 the operation expanded to Main Street when they became the owners of the then Road Town Bakery. The Thompsons eventually moved to the CB Romney Tortola Pier Park in 2015. This location is convenient as it is easily accessible to locals and tourists alike in the commercial district of Road Town. On any given day, lines of customers could be seen entering the restaurant to partake of all their favourites – whether it is a succulent beef or spinach lasagna; stuffed chicken breast; beef ribs; docouna, coconut dumplings and saltfish; Johnny cakes; coconut bread or mouth-watering raisin rolls or apple turnovers or a slice of Chef Mac’s signature plain cake – they are never disappointed.

When asked about their continued patronage, customers would often remark that they love the consistency in taste of Mac’s food, cakes and pastries.

10th Anniversary specials

To mark the 10th anniversary of Mac’s Restaurant Ltd., a new website has been launched at www.macs-restaurant.com. Persons are encouraged to visit the website and browse the daily breakfast, lunch, cake and pastry offerings. Orders can now be placed online.

Monthly specials will also be offered for the remainder of the year as the Thompsons celebrate with their customers. During the month of August, which is also Chef Mac’s birth month, a 10% discount is being offered on all cakes.

The opening hours for the restaurant are Monday to Saturday from 7.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Persons can also call the restaurant at 346-6227. A delivery service is also available free of charge during weekdays.

Community-minded business

The Thompsons are strong believers in civic responsibility and are always giving to worthy causes. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, they took the initiative to lower their lunch prices. This gesture was greatly appreciated by regular patrons of the restaurant. They also believe in training the next generation of chefs in the Virgin Islands and often look for opportunities to hire apprentices.

The Thompsons are very grateful for this golden opportunity that they have been given in business, through the operation of Mac’s Restaurant Ltd, to make a difference in the lives of others through an authentic culinary experience, and thank the many customers that continue to support them on this most rewarding journey.

Happy 10th Anniversary to Mac’s Restaurant Ltd.
