Overseas Drivers Now Required To Pass Road Skills Test
The law states, “Commissioner of Motor Vehicles may require an applicant for a driver’s license issued outside the Virgin Islands to pass a driving test before granting the applicant a driver’s license.”
Acting Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Mr. Kye Rymer told the Department of Information and Public Relations “in the past an overseas applicant would only have to pass a written test however in an effort to enhance road safety the DMV will now require all overseas applicants to pass a road skills test.”
According to Mr. Rymer the road test will be much faster than a learner driver road test as the DMV is only interested in ensuring that the applicant is capable of driving, understand the rules of the road and are able to maneuver on hills.
“No appointment is necessary and these tests will be administered Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.,” Mr. Rymer announced.
An information campaign has been launched in an effort to ensure that the relevant information is shared on the new expectations for overseas drivers.
Information will be disseminated via press releases, bulletins, radio reports, radio and television commercials and newspaper ads.
The Department of Motor Vehicles remains committed to providing efficient and accurate services in vehicle licensing matters and to promote driver safety in compliance with the road traffic legislation of the Territory.
