PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Chief Environmental Health Officer Mr Lionel E. Michael, along with the assistance of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), closed down another popular bar for alleged breach of the social distancing protocols as mandated by the Government.

“People were not six feet apart; the place was overcrowded,” Mr Michael said.

A fixed penalty ticket of $1,000 was issued for the bar located in Paraquita Bay for the violation last night, Sunday, September 12, 2021.

No regard for COVID-19 measures

“We are seeing a total disregard for the measures in the bars that are allowed to open at this time. Most importantly, the bar owner, the manager needs to introduce measures to manage the crowd and do not exceed the gathering number, which is 50. It is important that we do this in the VI because we do not want to have another outbreak of COVID-19, and the way things are going now, it seems like we are going to have another one because people are acting as if there is no COVID-19,” he said.

He then issued a warning to bar owners to follow the Government’s rules because the Social Distancing Taskforce will be monitoring and issuing fines as the need arises.

Spanish bar closed

Just on Saturday, September 11, 2021, a well-known bar in Sea Cows Bay, Tortola, had to be closed for being in breach of the government’s COVID-19 control and suppression measures for social distancing.

That bar was also fined $1,000 for the violation.

Mr Michael also said on September 8, 2021, a bar was also closed in Anegada and was fined $1,000 for not enforcing the social distancing protocols and wearing of masks.

Next Steps

“The procedure upon issuing a fixed penalty ticket for a business place includes (1) that they close, (2) that training takes place with the management and staff of the protocols and the measures followed by implementation of the measures and re-inspection and evaluation of the business to determine whether they can open. I don’t know how long that would take,” Mr Michael stated.

Here is a simple solution to bars being open. Let's see how mature people can be. Each table should only hold 2 people, each table should be 6 feet apart, bar stools should allow only 2 people like couples next to each other and every other 2 stools be 6 feet apart and so on, no standing or hanging around the bar between seated people, no overcrowding, after the allowed amount of people are inside, everything after that is "TAKE OUT". This mature approach can work if the owners make it so.

Agreed. On weekends J****** does be full of people and going u to late. These are the bars that help spreading these things. The authorities need to check it out on a weekend.

Keep the churches closed - they spread more than just the covid virus, they are a virus onto themselves that have helped to keep the world back

Please stfu if u don't have nothing good to say. When people goes to church, they have a forehead thermometer to check their temperature before entering the building, and after that their hands are being sanitize and they're socially distance when taking their seats while keeping their mask on. Unlike some bars, they don't do sh**... all they tell u is no mask no entry. There's never no social distancing, everybody having fun and forgetting the protocols. So therefore, ALL bars should close.

You are correct! They're not in the churches or supermarkets checking but harrassing the bars. Close them and pay them to remain closed until COVID decides it will stop spreading then. I don't understand how a bar is supposed to operate with distancing and masks on, it makes no @$%^ sense. I agree with the capacity being maxed at 50 but all the other stuff is just foolish. The focus needs to be on lifestyle changes and having health facilities ready for the inevitable 2nd wave.

You are correct, they cannot operate with masks and social distancing. That is exactly why they need to stay closed. The people who own those bars go to work daily and some of the workers are here illegally. I passed that bar last night and was wondering if they are above the law and what is so special happening in there because I passed other bars along the way and they were not as crowded.

You think closing a few 2x4 bars will stop COVID? People are still going to church, still going to the supermarket touching everything that 100 other people touched. When was the last time you saw a supermarket sanitize their shopping carts?

If you asked for vaccination cards at that gathering at the two bars you fined i guarantee at least 98% of the people were vaccinated, you are pushing for 75% papulation to vaccinate to open back the country but then when you go to bars and see people gathering don't ask to see if they are vaccinated or not, we understand you could still catch and spread Covid 19, but it supposedly it give you a 80% protection of layer against the virus, if its a harm for people who don't want to take the vaccine well that's on them. no matter how much proof and times you explain to unvaccinated they still wont do it, who don't hear would feel. GET VACCINATED this country needs to run freely again. AH!!!!!!!

They bars and night clubs should never have been allowed to reopen after the last outbreak. However, they were allowed to reopen and you are telling me the fine for breaching the rules is $1,000.00. Fine them $5,000.00 and you'll see they will abide by the rules.

You have children in the home why put them in danger. The virus is now targeting children. You want to drink, buy what you like to drink from the liquor store and cart your A**es at home and drink in your home.

We know that clubs are closed, bars and other business are open, fact, ok then , let’s close all the bars now, ALL in the BVI, This includes at restaurants, hotels, beach, resorts etc….. let the people life by bread alone… this will definitely stop the spread of this virus, this will help for everyone to stop fight about who takes the vaccine and who don’t, this will help the ever so falling economy, this will help bring back the tourism industry, and there will be no Covid in the world anymore because the Bvi have closed all night life, all entertainment, all clubs and bars closed, go ahead,do it, besides the Bvi is only known for churches and being holy over the years that is the reason it was named in the top 10 destination to visit. Don’t come together and start coming up with a plan and continue to blame the clubs and bars and all entertainment when it comes to clubs and bar. NO this virus was created in the bars and nightclubs so close them alll, Yoooo raaa ,Sarcastic , me never.

The government is right, instead of closing all bars , deal with the bars that violate the protocol,I hate it when some of these people talk that nonsense about closing all bars, these people have to make a living too.
