LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI - Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) said this year the Government of the Virgin Islands’ focus will be on the people.

He made the remarks during the D7 Town Hall meeting held on February 23, 2022, at the Church of God of Prophesy in Long Look.

The Minister said; however, naysayers will say that this is only being done “because it is an election year.”

“We have decided as a team, our focus this year- because we got a lot of infrastructure out of the way and some still ongoing- has to be you the people more directly. A lot of things we are going to be doing this year is going to be impacting you the people.”

He continued: “But there are those who are going to tell you they are only doing it now because election is coming up. You have to remind them where we started when we took over and during these turbulent three years. I will tell you I wouldn’t have taken this journey with any other team than this team we have here with you tonight, that you sent to work for this country over the last three years. I couldn’t ask for a better team.”

A lot of heat in the kitchen

In the meantime Hon Wheatley said despite the Opposition saying the contrary, running the territory in this COVID-19 era is no easy feat.

“They say only them in the kitchen knows about the heat, and there’s a lot of heat in this kitchen! But those on the outside would say 'oh no man, it is normal times' [but] these are not normal times, we haven’t seen a pandemic in over 100 years!”

He added: “There’s no playbook! The man who’s telling you them ain't got no plan, this, that, where’s the book to tell you what to do? We put our faith in God and we said God lead us, whatever you instruct us to do we are going to do.”

He said they have also not taken their eyes off the prize “of making sure that you the people are empowered with the things that you need because when you are strong, we are strong and the country is strong.”

He also urged residents to continue to encourage them “because we need encouragement too.”

You need to go and take a seat. I thought that the people was supposed to be the focus all along but because you know that election is fast approaching now you want to focus on the people? eyes roll i for one will not be voting for you come next election. I have been voting since 2007 and have always voted Party. But the time have come where i will no longer vote party but people which means splitting up my votes. This Minister clearly is bias and one sided and will not be getting any votes from my household. And its more then 20 persons in my immediate family are registered voters by the way.

Our focus “this year”? Should that be the consistent focus? Isn’t that a politician’s job? V.O.W’s language suggests that there are things to focus on outside election year. Sadly, BVI history corroborates this.
