Hodge-Smith made the appeal while speaking at the 2026 Sunday Morning Well Emancipation Service, as the territory reflected on the significance of emancipation, faith, and the responsibilities that come with freedom. 

“It is up to us, as the people of the Virgin Islands, to build and protect a society where future generations will feel safe, secure, proud, and empowered as Virgin Islanders,” Hodge-Smith said.

Faith played important role 

She emphasised the important role faith has played in guiding the Virgin Islands through its history and struggles.

“Their faith brought us this far,” she stated, acknowledging the strength and perseverance of those who came before.

Virgin Islanders need to remain strong 

“Our duty is to ensure the road ahead remains strong for those who follow,” Hodge-Smith said.

Her remarks underscored the need for unity, civic responsibility, and continued pride in Virgin Islands heritage. 

The Sunday Morning Well Emancipation Service formed part of the territory’s wider Emancipation Festival observances, which honour the journey from slavery to freedom while encouraging reflection on the work still required to build a stronger society.
