Opposition tries to bully HoA on formation of PAC @ Special Sitting for VI's heroes

- Motion withdrawn after Speaker queries whether notice was needed ahead of sitting
The Motion, which was not on the order paper of the sitting of today’s October 13, 2023, Fourth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly was brought by the Opposition Leader, Hon Ronnie W. Skelton. Photo: HoA/Youtube
The move slowed the House for the scheduled order of dealing with the matter of National Heroes. While the Opposition members had claimed that notice for the motion for the formation of PAC was not needed, the Premier said that was not the case and added that the sitting, the house had agreed to deal with a specific issue. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– The Special Sitting of the House of Assembly (HoA) today, October 13, 2023, was intended solely to honour the heroes and foreparents of the [British] Virgin Islands; however, Members of the Virgin Islands (VI) Opposition, namely Opposition Leader Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) and Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6), attempted to force an amendment of the Order Paper to addresss the issue of the formation of a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for the house.

The motion was brought to the Fourth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly by the Opposition Leader and seconded by Hon Walwyn.

While the Opposition Members had claimed that notice for the motion for the formation of PAC was not needed, the Premier said that was not the case and added that, ahead of the sitting, the House had agreed to deal with a specific issue.

Meanwhile, moving to recess after the motion was moved, House Speaker Corine N. George-Massicotte said she needed time to consider everything surrounding the motion and its eligibility.

On returning, the Speaker said, “While I had the opportunity to consider the motion that was moved, I will call on the Leader of the Opposition at this time.”

Motion withdrawn by Hon Skelton

Opposition Leader Hon Skelton then moved a motion to withdraw the original motion which was then seconded by another Opposition member.

Ahead of the withdrawal, the Premier assured the House that forming a PAC was not something his government was avoiding.

“I want to let the Opposition know, that there is no effort to avoid forming the PAC. While they are quite anxious to get it formed, I would just kindly ask that today we deal with the matter of the national heroes and leave that [PAC] for the next sitting,” he said

The PAC is an important institution of the local House of Assembly as it provides the necessary checks and balances for the Executive in an effort to uphold tenants of accountability, transparency, and good governance in public office.

What Ronnie did was unnecessary because he would had to already agree to the single agenda long before HOA met. These public show just disgust the people.

Myron and Ronnie could not agree to form the government but they can agree to create mischief.

Most people are AMAZED how the other 12 HOA Members and the Speaker have accepted as normal an elected Member in the House who has been arrested for corruption and may go to jail.

Myron should not be allowed to sit in the Parliament under the charges of corruption. If it was someone else I am sure he would remind them of their sins each time they came to the House. BVI has too much double standards.

all talk and no action is a big factor of the current administration. Just look around and nothing is being done. 2023 and yet some of us have no running water. Busy flying here and flying there while your road mash up. Giving themselves big pay cheques.

AS I SAID BEFORE , ITS ALL A RAT RACE ON BOTH SIDES / NONE TRUST EACHOTHER , SO THERE IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE A POWER STRUGGLE FROM WITHIN , AND WE ALL SAW
IT IN THE LAST ELECTION WHICH IS A TYPICAL EXAMPLE OF LACK OF UNITY AMONGST THEMSELVES / SO DON'T LOOK FOR INTEGRITY , IT WAS NEVER THERE

This definitely reveals a few things. 1)Sowande does not believe in accountability. 2)Sowande is trying to rack up as many airlines as possible and abuse the public purse for as long as possible in ways he could not justify if the PAC were in place 3) the egregious spending on folly and the lack of will to fund the needs within the community have NOTHING to do with the opposition.

Since April the government formed and to now, October, there is no PAC. 6 months later. To the point where the Opposition have to bring it through the House. Then Sowande is bold enough to lie AGAIN and say it is not something his government is avoiding. So what is it?

I think the Opposition was giving that man time but now it is time for action. I call on the Opposition to put an end to the nonsense! It is time. To hear Lorna say they need more time when she was on Tola radio. The same one who decide she had to make a move in less than 24 hours. She had zero care or concern for the real matters. Acted dumb when asked about what COI recommendations are being delayed. How can you NOT know as the deputy. She only wanted to talk about a stupid meeting she was about to have on an island. She running her own government. Sowande gone rogue. The junior in the 4th have been emboldened to follow after the foolish ways of her leader, Kye gone to sleep while the infrastructure is a disaster in itself, Sharie in Singapore looking for stupid points with her don't care attitude.

You all voted for this mess.

This is the Bush Professor from the Manda school of Pubic Policy, and the Henry VIII school of public speaking/writing, ie, I will be quick. Greed comes with huge opportunity cost. As a result of the April 24, 2023, General Election, the Opposition commanded 7 of the 13 seats, enough, a majority to form the next government. But by morning of 25 April, that opportunity vanished, because of an all out, free for all power struggle among the leaders of the three Opposition parties, ie, Hon Ronnie Skelton of Progressive Virgin Islands Movement , Hon Julian Fraser of Progressive United ( a one man party) , and Hon Marlon Penn of National Democratic Party. Each one refused to compromise, seeing only the prestige, power, status, and influence of being Premier, wanting to be in the pantheon of BVI political history and leadership. However, while the bulls fought, goring each other, the heifer Hon Lorna Smith made a dagger in the heart move, joining up with the Virgin Islands Party to form the government. The whole thing was a lesson, a bad lesson, in greed, distrust, deceit, treachery, integrity, etc. But as the Maxim goes, “want all, get none tarl,” The combatants forget that the art of politics is compromise. Now they wallowing in the political wilderness, mad as hell about the opportunity lost, crying bading pans of tears, etc. For some it was their last opportunity, perhaps, to be Premier. Nevertheless, hope springs eternal. Never say never. But one should never look a gift horse in the mouth. The current government is in power with the slimmest of margin, ie, 1 seat. Each member of government has the power to overturn the apple cart and become a King or Queen maker. The government better pull up its socks. I did say I was from the Henry VIII school of public speaking/writing and I would have been been quick. . Nonetheless, we talking about politicians; they rub off on you. They lie.. stretch the truth as lawyers .

@Bush P, “ current government is in power with the slimmest of margin, ie, 1 seat. Each member of government has the power to overturn the apple cart and become a King or Queen maker. The government better pull up its socks.” Fact. Government is behaving like it has overwhelming majority. The fact is it is in power because the power struggle allow Lorna the opportunity to jump ship, screwing the opposition. The opposition allowed its self to get screwed, making a bad assumption and looked a gift horse in the mouth. Its inept power hungry behavior is primary reason it is in the opposition, wollowing in the political wilderness. VIP better pulled its socks up, for talk, talk is cheap but money buys land. The people needs to take charge holding politicians feet to the fire. Politicians have proven they are untrustworthy, opportunists, spin masters, bold face liars, power hungry monsters, etc. The dastardly behavior/ actions mere hours after the April 24 election speaks volume, ie,,their words are empty and worthless, they can’t be trusted. They will screw whomever, wherever, however, etc for personal gain and don’t give a rat’s ass about the electorate till election time. Why do we fall for the same rope-a-dope every time, failing to throw/kick the useless bums to the curb.

Bully. Hmmm. They are just doing their Job. Gov. Call them out they are bullying, opposition call them out they are bullying. PAC should have been informed. Long long ago, over due. It's always a corrupt intent with this Govt. They refused to listen and do the right thing. .

Seems like Friday the 13th was a waste of time in the HOA. The holiday is Mon. 16 Oct. so reconvene the HOA on the appropriate day. There are no holidays for politicians.
