ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has defended his Government’s investments in local music festivals as events that boost the economy, despite criticisms from the VIrgin Islands (VI) opposition that the events are a waste of money.

The Premier during a press conference today, March 22, 2024, said music events not only boost the economy, but also provide jobs for artist, and simulate sales in a number of areas including food, beverages and rental cars to name a few.

This comes as he also announced that the venue for the 2024 Virgin Islands Music Festival, to be held under the slogan ‘60 Beats One Vibe’, will be the plot of land behind the Ralph T. O’Neal Central Administration Complex.

“And I'll add this about the opposition, several of them were in government between 2011 and 2019 and they used to give plenty of money to the music festival, and I find that often the opposition have selective memory… and often they put forward a opinions which contradicts their actions when they were in government,” he said.

Opposition saw benefits of music festival - Premier

He continued, “So they saw the benefit of music festivals when they were in government. But yet, they don't see the benefit of it now, and I would say to the public, while it might seem popular to look at these music festivals as a waste of money, I would ask them how should our artists feel?”

He further asked, how should the food and beverage companies feel when people look at music festivals as a waste of money, including the car rental agencies.

He said for events in the VI, it should instead be the opposition reaction from opposition members and community leaders.

“When these events happen, we should all be cheering leaders for the event. We should help to promote the events, we should be telling the world to come to the Virgin Islands as VI patriots, not playing politics,” he said.

The Premier said for the event, some $670,000 has been allocated from the Government side outside of the wider budget, and that things are expected to break even for the budget the ticket sales alone.

Our premier is so bloody childish.

So when faced with criticism he goes on to say:

But they were wrong too so I can be wrong as well.

    What a clown.

This is what Natalio D. Wheatley said, and I'll add this about the opposition, several of them were in government between 2011 and 2019 and they used to give plenty of money to the music festival, and I find that often the opposition has selective memory. Child in 2011 to 2019 the BVI wasn’t in the state that it is now, why are you always looking at what the opposition did and didn’t do if you thought it was wrong you should try to do better, but you don’t have it in you to do anything other than spend the tax payers money on your trips and parties. Natalio D. Wheatley you are the worse leader the BVI have ever had.

This is a dude who have no vision for the people of the British virgin island,he already know that social security, NHI ,immigration and labor departments bring in money, yet he let his cronies friend them pay less importation taxes for his supermarket and yet he sells the most expensive, these are the people we need to put in jail, the cost of living in the British virgin island is high and the ones who don't be in government and don't do drugs are feeling the heat...there should be a policy that whoever is in government cannot own a business outside from there work, because majority of these politicians are more focused on there own business rather than the people of this country.

He knows that when he taxes our already taxed money which we want to send to our families that would help us back home,
He could pounce down on it at Money Gram and Western Union, and other Courriers. He could find MILLIONS to give to his Budd__diesel., that's why he could give up monies so easily and so often.

Maybe one day we will all wake up and actually realize that we are one Virgin Islands. The water issues is for all of us, cost of living including supermarkets and utilities is for all of us, infrastructure situation is for all of us as we either drive on the same decent stretch of road or drop in the same potholes. The country don't belong to any political party and the excuse that you did it too is really now out dated and unprofessional. Try to get the place together and not you do it I going do it too. If it is not right or can be done on a better level then move accordingly. People are tired of all the party life for couple days while it's so hard to meet basic expenses no matter how the meager earnings is budgeted. Iet is strive for a better BVI and do so together

I think it's time to fix this territory and stop wasting monies on this type of fets. One fet in August for now until you fix the infrastructure and other needs of the territory. Waste of monies and the public suffering. Wake up out of you'll sleep. Yes it is a fact the tourism sector needs attention but fix the roads, bathrooms, enhance the historial areas make the culture apart of our everyday way of life and we will have no need for every Caribbean or other nations taking over our culture. Soon from now the bvi culture will go out the door completely because we are not protecting its people and its culture enough.

Things were not so dire back then.... people had spending and spare money.... cost of living wasn't so unreachable as it is now..... that's why you create a budget yearly to take into consideration the currently economic climate.... and as it is the current financial environment does not support unnecessary, frivolous spending that may not see a return on investment

In the event. .Also I suggest you have 4 selling stalls only 2 for drinks, 2 for food..Organizers have one of each.

To the Premier, yes, though precedent play a role in decision making, decisions made should be well-thought out, sound, provide benefits to the public, be for the public good,,and stand strongly on sturdy legs, etc..Decision making comes risk and not everyone will agree,,especially in a divided political environment. Typically, the Opposition is the alternative government in waiting and its job is not to hold hands and sing kumbya with government. As such , the Premier must resist for the most part when criticized about a decision used what a predecessor government did as a defense. It makes you look small,,and petty. Again, decisions come with risks and must be able to stand on their own legs..The best defense for a project,,etc, is the virtuous benefits provided to the public writ large..True, one cannot let themselves be swift boated but those defenses must be selective.

He is right but it was never to the tune of seven hundred thousand. When they did water and sewerage didn't have the kind of issues it has now and the roads were ten times better.

The people voted out the previous government for their decisions and voted your government in because they thought you were better. However you are proving and confirming that it is not the case. Your too will be voted out. Keep up the good works and continue to remind the people that you are only doing what the previous government did. That’s a plus for you.
