GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI – With the Jost van Dyke Police Station in a state of disrepair, there is urgent need for rehabilitation work to be done on the facility.

On a visit to the sister island of Jost van Dyke yesterday January 3, 2016, this news site learned that some works have started but those works are far from complete at this stage.

Further, despite our best efforts, we could not establish any definite timeline for the completion of the works.

One Government source, who asked not to be named, said some works have started on the building.

According to the government official, there are plans for a complete overhaul of the building, which houses not only the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) but also Immigration and Customs, since given the state of the building, 'patchwork' repairs will be inadequate.

“There has to be a complete overhaul of the building from top to bottom as it is not just the Police who are there but also Customs and Immigration,” said the source, adding that they could not say when the works would be completed.

The source said there continues to be one police officer assigned to the island and this has proven to be inadequate.

According to the source, during the high tourist season the inadequacy of the staffing strength of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force on the island of Jost van Dyke should be particularly addressed.

The Government of the Virgin Islands has been on a drive to rehabilitate the territory's police stations. The West End Police Station was the latest to receive a complete overhaul and works are also slated for the East End Police Station as well as the Road Town Police Station.

Once upon a time and not too long ago, there ws one police man assigned to all of the BVI. This was inclusive of the sister islands and the brother islands too. . Oh and Mr one constable also functioned as Immigration Officer. Either he functioned very effectively or these Islands and its people had a past civility uparalled because the prison was empty or with an occupancy of one or two now and then.
All that changed drastically when they arrived in droves to help us to "progress ". Thousands of constables needed to be imported to maintain civility Prison overcrwding and new prison now overcrowded. Lawyers and judges can"t done. Lawd lord, how many billions just for this buddy? But dem a part of the village so luv luv hmmm.

Running facilities to failure is not a cost effective facility management plan. Facilities are designed for a specific function with a design life. However, to deliver the function and attain the design life, require preventative, routine maintenance, timely repair, rehab and upgrade. Nonetheless, every facility from the Admin Building down is poorly managed. Operation is reactive, not proactive. Reactive operation results in greater operational and reconstruction costs, degraded and unreliable service, lesser level of service, unnecessary inconveniences...........etc.

Why does every government facility seem to be in disrepair? Is facility management not part of department heads' responsibility and the responsibility and accountability of ministers? Supervision, financial management, teamwork, judgement, initiative, asset management, creating warm, not hostile working environment; safe and healthy working environment.......etc should be part of managers' performance evaluation. The Premier is responsible for the performance of ministers; the electorate, HOA members.

If you have a refubished Police Station ,it may be a good idea to make sure its manned and can serve the public and tourists as its supposed to.Unlike West end on the day of that awful crash. LOL your right man
