POCKWOOD POND, Tortola, VI- Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Mr Gregory Skelton has highlighted the significance of launching the pilot initiative for the Hybrid Online Vehicle Renewal Programme in Tortola, as it aims to reduce the long delays customers often face when accessing these services.

The pilot programme is scheduled to begin on May 11, 2026, and will run throughout the month.

Skelton emphasised that this initiative is designed to decrease wait times and enhance service delivery.

Time efficient

He stated, “This process eliminates the need to visit the DMV and wait in long lines; however, it is not a same-day service. Applicants are required to upload their documents at least two days before their expiration date. Processing will take no more than two working days.”

The DMV has also confirmed that the processing time will be two days from the receipt of all required documents.

The programme was initially developed to provide a more efficient process, particularly for individuals with busy or demanding schedules.

Digital transformation

The commissioner further told our News Centre that this initiative is aligned with one of the Government’s main goals, which is digital transformation.

He noted, “As the world evolves and technology advances rapidly, it is essential for us to stay relevant and embrace modern solutions that enhance service delivery.”

Skelton expressed his hope that this pilot programme will have a meaningful and positive impact on the community. stating, “Our aim is for this initiative to evolve into a permanent service at the DMV,”

He further stated that, “Ultimately, we want residents of the Virgin Islands to experience vehicle licensing as a simple and convenient process, rather than something that feels burdensome or time-consuming.”

THESE DECISIONS ARE NOT MADE WITH THE INTEREST OF THE ELDERLY PROMOTING LAZYNESS

If you are that elderly that you can't even upload your documents to Traffic's portal then you shouldn't be driving. Anyone who isn't technically savvy enough to scan documents can always ask someone to do it for them. Unless, you are too elderly to form words into a sentence to ask for help. Its not lazy but its time consuming having to drive there and back and dealing with everything else at The Traffic Department whilst your business remains shuttered during that long length of time. Therefore, if we are able to utilise less time to deal with this matter, more of us are very thankful to the Traffic Dept for this new iniative. Most of us will be taking advantage of it. Blessed day to you, bro.

as many bloggers have pointed out in the previous story on this site. It only helps the DMV and not the public. you still have to drive down to DMV to collect sticker anyway - SMH

I am a senior citizen. I cannot drive all around looking for parking spaces. It would be more difficult for me to go online first to fill out an application, then go to an auto business for inspection for $20, then think I am going to give these businesses my CVV number on the back of my card, and then take all of that to motor vehicles to get my sticker. I can do all of that with one trip to the DMV. Sorry, but this is not for me. I don't mind the wait because I can take a mini nap until they call my number. LOL

Why? For garages to make money off of people. Having it implemented permanently is a stupid idea.

What if we expanded the concept a bit? What if authorized inspection shops were given a quota of decals to place on vehicles that pass their inspections? This change would eliminate the need to visit the DMV for the decal. Additionally, having authorized inspection centers on the main islands would prevent the need for boat trips from the outer islands. For those who still encounter issues with the online system, the traditional process could remain in place.

The day we lose internet the whole world will be at a standstill.. Technology is good but we depend too much on it.

Now someone is thinking. Now lets upgrade the process of obtaining a drivers licence. The cone test is outdated.
You are asked to fo something that pne wouldnt do in real life.
For instance, if I cannot get into a tight space, I will reverse and position my vehicle until I can do it safely.

Are going to be looking to fail cars so they can rip you off. DMV would be heaven if the staff behind their screens got on with it stopped looking at their phones and wondering about.

There are no garages that check vehicles in East End. We would have to drive to town anyway, and then where would we find parking??? East End has the largest community on the island. That would be a nightmare!
