GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI- A new one-way traffic system has been implemented on Great Harbour Road, extending from Rudy’s Marketplace heading eastward to Foxy’s Tamarind Bar on Jost van Dyke.

The Ministry of Communications and Works approved this change following the submission of a letter signed by over 160 residents of the Sister Island.

This was discussed in a meeting that included the Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5); Permanent Secretary, Mrs Elvia Smith Maduro; Second District Representative, Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull; Chief of Infrastructure, Mr Duane A. Fraites; and representatives from the Public Works Department and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

Safety concerns & operational challenges brought up

Local residents and stakeholders expressed safety concerns and operational challenges that affected both residents and businesses along that section of the road.

Honourable Rymer stated that the ministry will take action on the requests of Jost van Dyke residents in a safe and transparent manner. He noted that this traffic change aims to address, if not fully resolve, the challenges faced by residents and businesses in that area.

The minister added, “There are some roadworks and other civil mitigation projects that the residents raised as well, which the ministry will be following up on and executing in short order. The ministry remains committed to the people of the Virgin Islands, and in this instance to the people of Jost van Dyke.”

New signs installed

Directional signs have been installed, and the one-way traffic arrangement is now in effect; therefore, motorists are encouraged to comply with the signage.

The ministry anticipates that the new one-way system will improve traffic flow and safety for residents and enhance access for emergency and service vehicles. It added that roadworks and civil mitigation projects brought up during the meeting will be reviewed and scheduled for implementation.
