ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Senior Virgin Islands Party (VIP) officials have confirmed to our newsroom that former Labour Commissioner and 2015 Seventh District Candidate, Mrs Oleanvine Pickering-Maynard is the new Acting Deputy Managing Director at the British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA).

Her appointment was approved last week by the Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) led Cabinet after the BVIPA Board of Directors made the recommendations. Mrs Pickering-Maynard takes over from former Acting Deputy, Akeem R. Pickering who served in that post for the past year-and-a-half.

Mr Pickering has since been reverted to his previous post as Operations Manager. There are also reports that he was sent on a short leave with pay over an incident, however, officials are tight-lipped about the matter and whether further actions will be taken.

Mrs Pickering-Maynard holds a BSc in Business and Accounting and a Certificate in Management and before her recent promotion, she served as the Personal Assistant to the Managing Director. As the new Deputy Director, she is expected to act for three months before she is confirmed to the post.

Victim of NDP victimisation

Mrs Pickering-Maynard was among some 15 to 20 public officers between 2011-2019, at all various levels in government, who were forced out, transferred, fired, reassigned, sent on long leave or forced to retire with the full backing and in many cases, the directive of the former National Democratic Party (NDP) Government.

At a community meeting held on January 19, 2012, at the East End/Long Look Community Centre, the former Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. Kedrick D. Pickering told the packed centre that he was the reason why Mrs Pickering-Maynard “was removed from her post as Labour Commissioner and I take full responsibility.”

The former 7th District Representative reported that there were “too many complaints pointing in the direction of the Labour Commissioner Maynard” which prompted him to have her replaced.

Political Fight

In the 2015 General Elections, Mrs Pickering-Maynard challenged Dr Pickering for his 7th District seat with the VIP but was unsuccessful.

In 2019, Dr Pickering lost his seat after 20 years in office to Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) who eventually served as the First Deputy Premier under the new Fahie Administration.

Blatant victimization, his bad could never out weigh his good that warrants destroying a young BVI ISLANDER career. Suspended on his first day back from vacation, forced on mandatory vacation after return on his first day back from suspension. SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!!! WHO DOES THAT????????

These are two good people... I personally would have rather see Olivine as Speaker. She would have been a good Speaker. Our Treasury would have been a quarter dollars richer. That's the kind of money this present Stubborn speaker cost this government/ Tax payers. She would have Handle Mark case in a more professional way..If it wasn't for the good Premier intervention it would have been more. . Mr Pickering is still a young and bright man he will get another good opportunity... Olivine please keep your head on. Keep your kids far far away.. Do your roll, don't mess up... I really like you.. All the best.

Oh no! speaker she not cut out for that!

Love him or hate him, if we are honest, The esteemed is a excellent choice for speaker. To me the standards have raised, more people turn in, and the House is now respected.

As for the Mark melee I stand with the Speaker Mark is a joke

Ms Maynard better off maybe in a post where she can’t get in trouble, and if you are honest you know what I mean...

Like many other locales, BVI politics is tribal to the bone. You are either for me or against me. Silence means that you support the the other side; one cannot be neutral. Behaving political is inseparable from being human; human beings are political animals. In the BVI, politics permeates every aspect of our lives. The party(s) is the natural habit of political animals; the party in power rewards their supporters, qualifications aside; every party in the region and beyond does it. To the victor goes the spoil.

Government is supposed to be the product of civic cooperation and collaboration but the animating force is conflict and division, for without division there would be no need for politics. Politics is war without bloodshed, a means of resolving conflict without recourse to violence.

Moreover, thus, it should be no surprise that the ruling party is staffing government with supporters. This government is doing it and the next government will do it; only voters can change this behaviour. But which voter(s) is willing to demand change. We all wallow in self interest. For us, every decision is a transaction; transformation is the province of others.
