Old Madrid rolls back the years!
The first half of the opening game which followed the exhibition match between the National U20 Girls team and the U15 Boys team was hardly an advertisement for either team championship credentials.
The newly formed Lion Football Crew were full of running and aggression, but found it hard to break down the resolute and experienced Old Madrid defense and when they did, they found Haneef James in the Old Madrid goal unbeatable.
However it wasn’t James’ performance that stood out, as good as it was.
Lion’s James St Aimee had a golden opportunity to open the scoring mid way through the second half when he stepped up to take a penalty. However, Cleve Dowling, who had taken over in goal, stretched fully to his right to claw away the effort and keep the game in the balance.
Another flowing move this time started by Rueben Stoby down the left found Aimee again on the edge of the six yard box and despite the striker being adjudged off side, Dowling wouldn’t have known that as he came out to smother the shot.
Seemingly shocked into action, Old Madrid immediately began to boss the game. Almost immediately a quick break found Feron unmarked on the edge of the Lion’s box and he fired home his shot.
Ten minutes later, one became two and all three points were secured when Greg Covant went on a mazy run leaving two defenders in his wake before sliding an inch perfect pass to Humphrey Leue on the edge of the box. He looked up, picked his spot and gave the keeper no chance.
“We showed these guys experience counts for something and a win is a win,” commented Leue. “I looked up saw the open goal, didn’t have a lot of power behind the shot, but luckily it went in.”
