Officer who allegedly punches inmate likely for trial July 20
Steve Morton, who was on sick leave and could not make it to court on June 12, is facing one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm charge.
However, his lawyer Mary Lou Creque told Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens that she will provide the court with a medical document of her client’s illness. Furthermore, she stated that she is ready to proceed to trial.
According to court records, the defendant, who was on duty on July 11, 2011 at the juvenile unit at the prison, became upset after a juvenile inmate refused to wash dishes. It is alleged that he threw the inmate to the ground and punched him several times, causing him to become unconscious.
The inmate was treated for his injuries and complained that he had a headache and a sore neck.
