OECS stands with VI against colonialism & oppression

The OECS in a ‘Statement of Support and Solidarity by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) on the Political and Constitutional Future of the British Virgin Islands’, published on May 15, 2025, commended the Dr Natalio D. Wheatley-led government on the successful completion of the most comprehensive governance reform programme in its history.
According to the OECS, the completed reform programme is “an unequivocal demonstration” of the Virgin Islands’ commitment to good governance, transparency, accountability, and democratic values.
“This reform agenda is not only a significant domestic milestone but also a model of responsive leadership that deserves international recognition.”
‘Clear & measured aspirations’
The OECS said it acknowledges the clear and measured aspirations articulated by the elected Government of the VI, particularly their call to:
- Initiate constitutional negotiations with the United Kingdom on full internal self-government under a new pre-independence constitution.
- Ensure the full respect of the executive and legislative authority already devolved to the democratically elected institutions of governance.
- Lift the existing Order in Council that allows for unilateral constitutional suspension.
- Avoid any politically motivated economic impositions that would undermine the territory’s financial services sector or economic stability.
The OECS was one of the regional institutions that had spoken out against the UK’s plans to suspend the constitution of the Virgin Islands and impose direct rule, shortly after the arrest of then Premier Andrew A. Fahie.

Other countries political government leaders, and their people are not the ones living under the dictatorial tactics of our local political leaders. We the people of the B.V.I are. Those of us that are daily feeling its pressure, we are the ones esperancing its pain.
If the "Order of Counsel is hurrily lifted before better behavioral change, behavioral changes will not happen, especially under this local presence government policies, in my opinion, and many others, too.
