CASTRIES, St Lucia- As the people of the Virgin Islands (VI) begin to mobilise to demonstrate to the United Kingdom (UK) that they are not in favour of any direct rule as recommended in the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) Report, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) has made it known that it stands with the people of the VI in rejecting direct rule by the UK.

According to the CoI Report, serious dishonesty may have taken place in Government and by Members of the House of Assembly (HoA) over recent years and recommended a temporary partial suspension of the constitution. This means that there would be neither ministers of government nor elected representatives and the VI would be run by the Governor.

VI Gov’t & people rejecting UK takeover

Acting Premier Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has said the recommendations in the CoI Report could be implemented without the need for suspension of the legislature and constitution, and has called for a mutual partnership with the UK.

The people of the VI; however, have also been making their objection to possible direct rule known, via various platforms, including meetings and public demonstrations. Such as demonstration was held outside Government House today, May 2, 2022, where approximately 300 persons turned up at short notice. More demonstrations will be held over the next few days.

Direct colonial rule by UK has never worked well- OECS

The OECS also said it has noted the position taken by the duly elected Government of the VI which, while welcoming the recommendations arising from the Inquiry, rejects the intention of the British Government to impose direct rule on the VI.

“It is clear to us that, in principle, it is a bad idea to impose direct colonial rule and the history of such imposition in the Caribbean has never delivered the desired result.”

UK ‘bound’ by UN Declaration

The OECS said it concurs with the elected representatives of the people of the VI that abolition of Parliament with direct rule from London represents a retrograde step in the evolution of the democratic process that is inconsistent with the United Nations Proclamation of Human Rights to be free of colonial rule.

“The UN Declaration on granting independence to colonial countries and peoples - Resolution 1514 of 1960 is an international commitment to which Britain is itself bound.”

OECS urges UK to respect wishes of VI people

According to the OECS statement, the historical responsibility for strengthening governance in the VI must rest on the shoulders of the elected representatives and the people of the VI themselves. “That ultimately will be the guarantee of good governance and full, transparent accountability.

“We strongly urge the British Government to work with and support the elected Parliament in this process of rectification.”

The OECS also said it is willing and ready to provide technical and other support required by the VI as an Associate Member State in addressing the governance issues that need attention.

BVI has some ignorant elected Representatives.

Who protests while dissing the UK then gets dressed up to go to a meeting later in the day with the UK Rep who came to discuss matters.

You put a dress or lipstick on a oh it’s still a pig.

That’s like telling a rambunctious child you’ll discuss their reprimand from school later and they throw a tantrum instead of awaiting a levelheaded discussion.

I would prefer the UK rule over the our own. Our own has failed us. The scripture says do not put your trust in man. What the Almighty God Wills I have to agree with. If the country changes it changes if it stays the same it is the will of the Almighty God.

I dont think you fully understand what is happening. The scripture say don't put your trust in man. Our own has failed us. We as a people need to dig deep my friend clearly the handwriting is on the wall. No UK ruling us period. Slavery has been abolished a long time and God knows our pain. So if you want the UK to rule you let's help you with a ticket to go there and sort your self out.
All that glitters is not gold. Sometimes we have to take the pain and suffering to learn. Patience is the key to our new beginning. Pray that the will of God be manifested not for UK to rule us and impose their pressures on us.

It doesn't matter how much any organization protest, we played into the UK's hand and they will decide our fate. The BVI will always be remembered, based on what happened to our Premier. By the way he, Fahie, was removed as the head of the ruling VIP Government meaning he may not be viewed as Premier. There goes his claim of diplomatic immunity. Did his colleagues acted to quickly to remove him and in a bid for power pushed him under the bus?

I have been saying this for years the Caribbean on its own has so much power. It may just take something like this to unite the Caribbean or just the OTs to start. Free movement, free trading, reduce some measures for working permits, share resouces, encourage and ensure good goverance between the OTs.

OTs-Exit British rule and join their own alliance.

The UK has the unilateral power to undemocratically imposed rules on the BVI without input of the people. It is a double standard, for democracy is important for Britons but not so for Virgin Islanders. It is something straight out George Orwell’s classic Animal: All animals are equal but some are equal than others. What the UK is imposing on the BVI is autocracy, not democracy. The people of the BVI have no recourse for heavy hand dished out by the Uk. “…….. represents a retrograde step in the evolution of the democratic process that is inconsistent with the United Nations Proclamation of Human Rights to be free of colonial rule.” The UN is a useful paper tiger and the UK does give a rat’s ass about the BVI freedom, human right……etc. So what if it does not like what the UK. The BVI people is behaving like docile sheep. Where have all the Noel Lloyds, Dolph Faulkner’s, etc gone. Leonard mentioned Christopher Fleming in his VI People Betrayal, Disloyalty and Treachery article. Incidentally, the OECS and E. Leonard made many similar points. Suspending the constitution is a throw back to colonialism. Colonialism was good for colonialists but a horrible experience for people in the colonies. The UK is not dealing fairly and equitably with the BVI people, the BVI government but this is not new. The UK never saw nor treated the people in the colonies as equal.

The mythical Willie Lynch did a super good job in conditioning the slaves and their descendants. It has been a 186 years since independence but we are still betraying each other and the race. In 1949 when the population was about 7000, some 1,500 hundred showed up and participated in The Great March of 24 November 1949 to fight for equity and equality. Today, to preserve democracy, promote national pride, fight racial stereotypes, show racial unity, etc, a few hundred people showed up. Too busy or disengaged to be bothered. Happy to let the UK kick the Back into colonial rule and be treated like a door. Dissapointing. If we want equality , we got to unite and fight for it.

To error is human. With the yoke of colonialism returning, the Uncle Tom in me was yearning for freedom and said “independence” vice “emancipation.” People everywhere else is fighting for freedom, fighting autocracy for democracy, resisting the forces that want to govern, not lead them, etc. The Ukrainians fight against the evil empire Russia is an example. Virgin Islanders lacking the spine and will to fight for their human rights, the right to vote, the right to charter their own path, the right as a people not to be imprisoned by another people(slavery and colonialism),etc raised the white flag and surrendered. Virgin Islanders of the 1940s had more vision, courage, more stones, more pride, more national identity, more will to fight being ruled by colonial masters (they saw the vice, the evil, the beast of colonialism)etc, than the current lot of selfish, materialistic, weak-kneed Virgin Islanders. The Dolph Faulkner, Noel Lloyd, etc, must be thrusting back and forth disgustingly in their graves. Virgin Islanders get off the bended knees, stop kissing and worshiping the ring, and fix yourselves. Get some decency, get some worth, get some pride, etc. Stop behaving inferior. Stop being sambos. Exhibit the Virgin Islands fighting spirit.

Though it is extremely wrong what Fahie did, one thing that has become quite clear. The British set this whole thing up so that they can take away the voting right of the BVI people. They had it all planned from the events leading up to the arrest of Fahie to coincide with the release of the COI report and its recomendation .It was an agenda that had to be pulled off and they use Fahie 's weekness take him down so that they can pull off their scheme.

M’s Flax, you say UK didn’t give us anything. Please account for the $92m they gave after Irma!
The reason that the government didn’t take the loan was accountability, the UK wanted to ensure the money wasn’t squandered.
You, madam, have a very short memory!!

@Concerned, the VI experienced approx $1B plus in damages from super Hurricane Irma. And the UK give a measly $92M. Really. Look at what French give their colonies by comparison. In the event, the UK has an outstanding account payable bill for Slave (brutality, exploitation, rape, dehumanization, marginalization, etc) reparations, so this so call $92M is a small payment. The BVI is still carrying an account receivable with accumulated interest for reparations from the UK. When is it going to pay up, when is it going to offer a simple apology for slavery?

@Ne Timeas, I also noted that E. Leonard and OECS a
blog shared similar points. E. Leonard blog was long so it probably get attention. People can read for themselves and make their decisions but he truthfully hard on politicians ( calling them scoundrels), on the BVI and BVI people(noting how they got drunk on their success and lost sight of things) and called for the BVI people to get civically engaged, called for the BVI people to unite among other things. That said, this is not the BVI finest hour. As the old used to say it brought its pig to a fine market, except it was sarcasm for the market is bad. There is song that says don’t cry for me Argentina. Well, we got to cry for the BVI, for it has fallen and reached rock bottom. Now, the people has to come together and climb out out of the people. However, the people must fight valiantly and purposefully to oppose suspension of the constitution and the substituting of direct rule. It must resist being involuntarily dragged back into colonialism. Colonialism is vicious, not virtuous, circle that needs to be closed and flung in the dung heap of BVI history. Unite. Unity is strength. I read a powerful post by RA Skelton on the need for unity in this grave hour. It is long but also a worry read. Give it a read. We must go for more than the catchy melee teasing headlines. Post with melee get more comments than serious commentaries.

There is no debate here, for there to be a debate there typical at the least two or more people engaging. He or she who has the power sets the agenda. The UK has all the power; BVI nought. Decades ago, the colonial potentates, including England/Britain, got together to divide the globe into colonies, apportioning them among European powers, creating the vicious institution of colonialism. Colonies split up, the colonial invaded the colonies, confiscated their resources, enslaved people to work land to produce the UK with commodities to use and build and grow their economy. That was not enough though, the colonies and people were organized and controllled in a manner like furniture to play a subordinate role to the elite in England. The people in the BVI were powerless. Now they right back in the jaws of the UK and colonialism. But the BVI people so damn stupid, inferior, simple minded, disunited and behaving like crabs in a bucket and so on that they are just sitting back and eating out of the UK hand. Damn simpletons.
