ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) has said the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) and his ministry, by extension, are unsure as to the cause of the recent nurse absenteeism across the Virgin Islands (VI).

Reports of nurses absent from work at clinics across the islands surfaced on Thursday, March 12, 2026, and the BVIHSA, in a statement, said that while it was aware that several community health staff members had reported sick, it had not received any formal notification of industrial action or organised protest.

“As a result of the reduced staffing levels, services at some community clinics have been impacted or significantly reduced. Currently, services remain available at the clinics on Anegada and Virgin Gorda, while the Authority works to address staffing at other locations,” the statement added.

Accreditors are here, nurses are absent- Hon Wheatley

On the evening of March 12, 2026, Hon Wheatley was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Central Tortola’s meeting, during which he addressed the alleged sick-out.

“We’re not actually sure what is happening,” he confirmed.

He assured that the VI’s health institutions are accredited but go through yearly evaluations.

“One is happening right now in the BVI; the accreditors are here. So they’re going to various clinics and so forth.”

According to Hon Wheatley, the accreditors visited clinics in Road Town, Jost van Dyke, and Long Look between March 11 and 12, 2026, and nurses were absent at all locations.

He said he called to inquire about the reason, whether it was a strike or a sickout and has not received a “firm answer”.

“So it is being investigated as to exactly [what is happening]. Did someone write a letter and say if you don’t do x,y,z, we’re going to stay home? The answer is no. Did someone say anything? The answer is no. So we’re not really sure what is happening.”

In efforts to lighten the mood, Hon Wheatley added, “Maybe there’s a pandemic going around with nurses that we don’t know about.”

The BVIHSA advised patients to seek emergency care at the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital if necessary.

when you have to work a 12-hour shift with limited resources and hardly any brake you most burn out and bond to call in sick often. fix the schedule and hire more nurses so the work can be distributed fairly.

I am firm believer that its important very important for compqnies, businesses and prganization must reward the workers show up and show up early...That will solve all the lateness and sick out problems...its also a middle management most the sick out and lateness people are isually friends with their supervisor, because of that those people name call first when benefits giving out.....So, We have a serious problem in the work force....Again find ways to reward those workers that show up and show up early...That's a workable and realistic solution..

Poor organisation from the nurses. If they want to be impactful and change anything, they should have laid out clearly what it is that they want and why and communicated that with someone who has the ability to change the situation. This just comes off as disorganised and half-arsed. No one knows whats going on and the leverage has disappeared. It'll just be a mark against those absent nurses names.

Management is quite aware of what's going on! They're just pretending to not know.

@ Drain the Swamp BVIHSA. You hit the nail straight on the head. With them two individuals as the chief hunchos at the hospital nothing will change. I tell you today without hesitation, that if they don’t get rid of Malone - Smith and Miss Samuel, things will only get worse down there because people morale and work ethics are stifled. That place needs people who are competent to structure it and give good health care to the people. The board need to listen to the cries of the nurses and drain the swamp quickly.

Sundays are supposed to be 2x the regular pay, however since a HR manager from East Bank it went to 1.5 . He was sent on administrative leave over 3 years and the new HR HEAD even though acknowledging the fact still continues to pay 1.5 .

This absenteeism impacted my family... Members turned up at a clinic only to be told that it wasn't operating...
I think the Nurses did a poor job of publicizing that they were undertaking an industrial action if that's what it was.
The Nigerian nurses I met last year weren't very happy with things here. That's probably all the intel I have on the topic. They were disappointed with their migration experience...
