ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- He only got seven minutes of playing time but all eyes were on him whenever he touched the court and no doubt his team Southern Mississippi were the fan favourites as a result, which is why patrons, some equipped with ‘vuvuzelas’, at the BVI Tropical Shootout last evening December 21, 2013 would have been ecstatic that Norville ‘Banana’ Carey and Southern Miss defeated University of Arkansas, Little Rock (UALR) for the championship.

Southern Miss overcame UALR 74-60, which was a comfortable victory that was won in the second half as UALR started off looking a solid unit with their quick movements of the ball and traded shots with Southern Miss for much of the first half.

The energetic Neil Watson worked his way to a game high 19 points and was later named Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Daveo Boardingham (11 pts, 10 rebounds) and Michael Craig (10 pts.) were the other players in double figures for Southern Miss.

UALR were led by James White who slammed in 18 points and entertained the crowd with a couple of dunks early in the game.

Will Neighbour had 12 points and Josh Hagins 9.

Southern Miss led 33-28 at the half and outscored UALR 41-32 in the second half for an impressive 11-2 record this season. UALR are 4-7.

Carey, who didn’t manage to score any points but was credited for a block during his seven minutes on the court, was given a trophy for being the most popular player. He didn’t have any complaints either about not getting more playing time. “That is alright, I know when I get my minutes I just try to get better and do what I have to do…I just coming off the bench, playing my role and contributing as much as possible to the team,” the Virgin Islander told this news site.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Basketball Events Management Ltd (BVI), Mr Glenn S. Harrigan had encouraged fans to come out in their numbers and had even put special concessions in place for the games with reduced ticket prices across the board, along with free entry for the first 100 students, compliments of CCT. Mr Harrigan told Virgin Islands News Online he was pleased with the response.

“I think for the first time it was a very good tournament. Tonight’s turnout was especially pleasing for us and it went very well. It is something that we are going to continue to build on and hopefully next year, with all the time in the world to plan it properly, we will have a packed house.”

Basketball Events Management (BVI) Ltd had taken over the organizing of the NCAA sanctioned Division 1 tournament at the last minute after it faced possible cancellation due to lack of funding. The now annual event is the brainchild of former National and college player, Steve E. Parillon.

The BVI Tropical Shootout 2013 featured four Division 1 college teams this year: University of Southern Mississippi; University of Arkansas, Little Rock; Jacksonville State University, Alabama; and Coppin State University, Baltimore, Maryland.

Jacksonville State took third place after overcoming Coppin State 72-61 in the first game last evening.

All the talking about this event and it did not even have the support of the locals. This is disappointing. You bring these guys to the islands and hardly anyone came out to see them play. This is not a good sign at all. Here we need to put a big calender together for the entire year with a good planning committee to map out events and pricing for the entire year. Everything that sounds good does not mean it is good for the country. We just give these guys an early Christmas present. A trip to the Virgin Islands. I am sure they are very happy despite the turn out was poor.

  • Expensive Basketball Tickets...AL (25/12/2013, 22:06) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
These games were too High. They needed to be $10 to get in period forget upstairs and downstairs and $5 dollars for kids. YOU GET YOUR SEAT AS YOUR COME. And

Reason for the tickets only being ten dollars and five for kids, is the fact that someone may wanna bring there wife and kids to this event. more people in the gym better atmosphere. You have a family of lets say six.

You, your wife, and lets say all of your kids are under 13. That's only $40, compared to $60. Yes it's $20 dollars cheaper but that same $20 you get back from drinks and foods, from the concession stands.

Some nba game tickets aren't even $20. You want support, make it more affordable please guys.

Many people I know wanted to come out, and would have came for the outing for $10.

    ON ANOTHER NOTE....

That being said, the town basketball league needs to be $2 dollars for kids and $3 dollars for adults...until playoffs...then raise it to $3 and $5...Watch how much support we get.
