ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Barney Nockolds, a 10th Grader at Cedar International School, has planned a fundraising cycle race from Road Town to West End with a finish at Nanny Cay in November.

What started as a school project has now become a passion as he intends to raise funds during the venture for the charity “Race for Heroes”.

“I go to Cedar School and this year I have to complete a project for Grade 10. As cycling is my passion I am organizing a cycle race which will be held on Sunday November 13, Remembrance Sunday,” commented an enthusiastic Nockolds.

Remembrance Sunday is all about remembering the heroes of past wars who were killed. The charity, Help for Heroes raises money to help heroes who have been injured. One of the things they do is provide sporting equipment to help the injured get back to health and fitness in any way they can.

His idea is to have the race on Remembrance Sunday “so that we remember the living as well as the people who died.”

There will be a race for adults which will start in Road Town and go all the way to West End and then back to finish at the Tortola Sports Club, where breakfast ($8) will be served. A short race for children will also take place, followed by the prize giving ceremony.

“Money will be raised for the charity through the entry fees, sponsorships for each rider, private sponsorship from companies and collection tins,” stated Nockolds. “I have written to the Governor, Boyd McLeay and asked him to start the race and give the prizes.”

There will be various categories including Ladies, juniors, Elite, Veterans and Masters. Teams of three or more can also compete. There will be a “casual ride” for fun/novice riders.

“I hope all my cycling friends will join in and compete both in the race and the competition for prizes for the junior and the adult who raise the most through sponsorship.”

Cedar school students will be running a crèche ($5 per child) for parents who wish to compete and need child care.

“I really believe in this and really want to make a difference even if it is only in a few people’s lives. My goal is to make this an annual event so that at least once a year we remember our Heroes. We all need heroes in our lives and sometimes we don’t need to meet them to know that they are there, we just need to ‘Help the Heroes’.”

Whilst still working on the final prize lists, Nockolds said they will include “free top ups or free movies from U.Ps for Under 18’s and the person who raises the most money will be eligible for the big prizes including a weekend sailing trip or even a weekend for four at a top local resort.

Pre-registration for the event takes place from November 4 from 3 p.m. at the Sports Club where riders can enter the race and pick up sponsorship forms.

Isn't the BSAFE 24 hour challenge set to finish 13th November? I hope they can each show support for both causes in some way, although it is sad that this new "cause" may distract the public from BSAFE's ride which will in fact benefit youth of the community.

Barney has been organising this since May. I think this article doesn't give the full story of Barneys involvment and dedication in this. He had to get permission from the charity before proceeding with the plan - he is currently their youngest representative in the world.
