ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The episode that ‎unfolded at its worst last Friday March 27, 2015 where a large number of persons were made to stand in the scorching sun and into the night at the Magistrate's Court at John's Hole has infuriated residents.

"People got dogs getting better treatment than us when you talking about that happening out here, they treating us ‎like we have no value and one class is more deserving than others," said an irate relative of Kenyetta Boynes as they waited for hours at the court.

As of recent, the Magistrate's court has been outfitted with security gates with a small entrance for walk-ins.

Not barred from entering with vehicles are lawyers, police officers and court staff. In the case of last Friday where there were an unusual number of matters being heard alternately by Senior Magistrate Ms Tamia Richards and Magistrate Ayana Baptiste-DaBreo, the effects of being locked out were ever so evident.

"We can find no place to sit except for the ground which I wouldn't do, the sun hot like hell then the dew come and we still standing out here. They need to provide benches and shelter out here. Even the prisoners more comfortable than us," said one man at the court.

At one instance an oversized man, who struggled to walk as he also appeared unwell, was forced to take shelter in the jeep of someone who had permission to enter the gate. "This is extreme, look at that, just look at that, that man should have been allowed to drive in because of his condition. We being treated like pigs man," said another bystander at the court.

One person expressed the need for night court to eliminate the long hours of waiting for some cases to be called.

Now I must say that they need a new location for court. I had to stand outside and it started raining on us. Not only that, I am sick and had just had surgery and I had to ask someone if I could sit in their car. We were waiting 2 hours for that court session to clear for us to go in next. Cattle are not even treated like this. They need to build another floor so we can sit until they call us. This is the humane thing to do.

Indeed, it appears that the present situation is very inconvenient for those having matters heard at the John's Hole facility. Perhaps, there is a wider security issue at stake, one which is outside the control of the magistrates who preside there. We have to face up to the fact that the BVI is no longer the BVI of yesteryear. One could imagine that this abrupt measure was prompted by a rather disturbing circumstance. Having said that, it is now for the higher authorities to find a solution to the problem.

What is the point of letting us sit inside until court starts only to be put out again when they are in session. No, we need seating all the time.

Stay away from the Courts. Stop your bad behavior. Stop breaking the laws. Overcrowding everywhere like cockroach infestation. Stay home. Stay away.
