‘No person from Virgin Islands’ applied for BVIAA MD position- Premier Fahie

- said BVIAA Board & ASSI were responsible for hiring
Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has revealed that no Virgin Islander applied for the position of Managing Director of the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA), paving the way for an overseas applicant to be hired. Photo: Facebook.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) on January 13, 2022, broke the news that St Lucian Kurt A. G. Menal will be the new Managing Director of the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA), the question of why no local was appointed to the position became popular.

Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has; however, revealed that no Virgin Islander applied for the position.

No local applied

Hon Fahie, during a press conference today, January 28, 2022, also stated that the United Kingdom’s Air Safety Support International (ASSI) had a hand in the hiring process, adding that it was being stated in the public that the BVIAA Board alone was responsible.

“I did my research with the Airports Authority because as you know it is a corporate body and I made sure I asked them for all the information.”

Premier Fahie said he was informed very clearly that ASSI was involved in the hiring and also that more than 60 persons applied for the position of the BVI Airports Authority CEO, including persons as far as Afghanistan.

He lamented; however, that no local applied.

“No person from the Virgin Islands applied for that position, none,” Premier Fahie stated and repeated.

Prior to Mr Menal's hiring, former Speaker and Legislator of the House of Assembly, Mr Keith L. Flax, a pilot, had been named the new Acting Managing Director of the BVIAA following the departure of another local, Mr Clive Smith.

ASSI’s involvement in hiring process

Speaking on the involvement of ASSI in the hiring process, Premier Fahie reminded that ASSI is charged with the oversight of Civil Aviation Safety Regulations with the UK Overseas Territories and the vacancy was also advertised on its website.

“They [Board] went through all the applications. ASSI helped to vet them because it was not only done by the Board as persons are saying. It was mainly dealt with by ASSI with a number of applications because they also have to certify and regulate the airport, so they were looking for certain things in the applicants.”

Hon Fahie continued that the applications, through vetting from ASSI, were shortlisted down to 10 persons and then the interviews were done.

“And the current MD now is the one who was successful.”

Nothing against outside expertise- Premier

Premier Fahie said there is the perception being fueled by some that the Government was not looking out for locals but the reality is that “no one from the Virgin Islands applied.”

“But it is hard to place a Virgin Islander in a position if none applied,” Premier Fahie emphasised, adding that it would raise questions of transparency and accountability.

He said; however, that the majority of top posts in the territory are filled by Virgin islanders but he did not want to give the impression that the expertise of persons outside of the VI was not needed.

“Every country is going to need that. You need that balance at the end of the day, despite you want to make sure our people are on top of those areas.”

As long as the position is carried out in the manner in which it should, I don’t care if the man is from Venus, Pluto or Mars. Something is wrong as to why Locals is getting kicked out of these positions. Perhaps when a Local is put in a high position it goes to their heads and they take it to much to the limit.

I will agree with you on that. Most locals that is put in positions is not fully qualified. They are put in the positions based on family names, who is related to whom IE.. cousin, sister knowing the person is not fully qualified to carry out the duties of the job description. I WIIL NOT hire any family members or put any family members in any positions unless they are and can prove that they are FULLY CERTIFIED AND CAPABLE TO CARRY OUT THE DUTIES OF THE JOB. Not because my cousin knows how to change a pipe or a water faucet means that he is a CERTIFIED PLUMBER.

Had Andrew not pointed out clearly that no BVIlander had applied the comments would have been overloaded with negativity. I've lived in the bvi for 19 years.one of the things I've observed is that the ignorant bvilanders are the ones loudest, (ignorant being used in its right context). I remember a few years ago there was an opening at my wife's workplace, one day she told Me she was confused that her boss was willing to risk monies to import a young lady from the Philippines,(they paid her passage to the bvi) even after receiving local applications.

It is about full control when someone is on work permit. People should start using their common sence and stop letting people take advantage of them

Wake up lady's and gentlemen it's clear get your qualifications so you to can be suitable for the position when it comes around again. I am about black ppl controlling key roles in black countries you know why it give hope that we all can be there too. Stop the shit about where in the Caribbean we from. In case you all ain't notice we are the problem we face. Too much back bitting and kicking down persons that look like us. Up lift and stop tearing down other black people.

I think the Security chief should do the hiring for security officers. He knows what he is looking for in a person not some useless board who has no idea of nothing or what's going on on the ground...

No local wants to be on a sinking ship! Yes there are highly qualified locals. But who want to deal with Lake or BS or Flax? A set of boards with unqualified and inexperienced people who want to run the daily show and victimized people! Make sure only VIP contractors get any work. They don't allow the MDs to do their jobs and run the organizations like Port, Airport, Hospital, Tourist Board, immigration and so on. Nobody wants to be in that mess.

ninety nine percent of the times we expats bash Virgin Islanders saying we are getting the jobs because we are more qualified. It is not about qualification and experience , most of the times we expats are paid less, we tolerate the abuse because we know we do not have any family to give us a helping hand but instead we have our famulies back home depending on us so we suck it up and that is what the employers are taking advantage of.
