ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The winning athletes may have taken the plaudits during the 2nd BVIAA Development Meet on Saturday January 28, 2012 at the A O Shirley Recreational Ground, but one aspiring runner, Destiny Samuel showed, with a little help from Samantha John, that she has what it takes to go through then pain barrier in her search for track success.

Samuel, competing in the 800m, was obviously in great distress after one lap, but despite being on the verge of tears, in obvious agony and stumbling around the curve, she gathered herself and carried on.

The home stretch finally beckoned and with Sprint Tech. team mate, Samantha John, who had already completed the race returning to be by her side in an act of unrivalled sportsmanship encouraging her to the finish line, Samuel overcame her pain and achieved her goal.

Such is the clamour for highlighting those who are victorious, little concern was shown by officials for Samuel’s plight, but hopefully the supportive actions of John and the determination of Samuel will not deter her from wanting to take on the distance again.

The race was won by Niayla Smith (U20) in a time of 2:22.39; John (open) was second and 400metre Hurdler, Bianca Charles (open) 3rd.

In other events, Nelda Huggins and J’Maal Alexander added to their 100m triumphs in the 1st Development Meet with convincing 200m victories.

Huggins stormed to victory amidst strong competition to win in 25.01 seconds into a -1.0 mps headwind. Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses, who won the 800m in her last outing, was second in 25.38 seconds.

Alexander, in his final year of Under 20 Boys Class competition, opened his 200m season with the second fastest time of his career and fastest on home soil, when he ran 21.89 with a +1.3 tailwind. Shaquoy Stephens ran a personal best of 22.19 to finish second and Brandon Andrew 3rd.

Zeniah Corea pulled off an Under 13 Girls Long Jump/800m double, with a leap of 4.00m and an unchallenged run of 3:11.83.

Khiry Creque also ran an unchallenged 800m personal beat of 2 minutes, 00.67 seconds.

The next race in the series is scheduled for February 11. Beginning with that meet, all participating athletes will pay $1 to compete in the competition.

The fees, which also include a $5 charge to compete in championships, are a form of registration fee for athletes and brings the BVIAA in line with IAAF Regulations.

Good work to all thoses athletes who work really hard to accomplishtheir goal, but to those that are using enhancements that have them on the track hipper, hiper like they on crack it needs to stop. The BVIAA needs to start testing all athlete before they allow them to run. It was so ovious that on Saturday u could hear some parents talking about an individual athlete taking drug enhancement for his performance and when he go overseas can't perform. The President of the BVIAA needs to look into this matter it is serious.

Instead of applauding this young athlete for a great performance you all are there trying to bring him down because of his great performance with no facts to back you all up, do you know how hard these athletes work per week on the track and in the gym get your facts straight, and for those parents who sit their every track and field meet and talk crap about people children remember God ain't sleeping because you have children too

How could you parents make allegations like that? Could you even envision that the athletes work hard and the hard work is paying off? There is nothing wrong with acting hyper. Maybe it is a way of keeping the adrenaline in check. The boy was good before, he has just improved. Do you expect him to be running the same time like last year. Get real. Also, be careful of making unsubstantiated comments, it may come back to haunt you. To the athletes who are working hard, keep it up, you will reap the benefits of hard clean work. Do not be deterred by the negative comments of some irrsponsible adults who are parents. Nonsense, nonsense, utter rubbish from reckless adults In closing, prove your allegations or muzzle your mouth.
