No lights to see mail boxes @ Road Town Post Office

- Customers outraged that they cannot check their mail boxes at nights at the Old Post Office on Main Street in Road Town because of the lack of lights!
The area that houses the mail boxes at the Old Post Office on Main Street in darkness up to last night, March 8, 2015. Many critics of the NDP Administration claim that this is yet another example of where the Government is not paying attention to the small things that affect the ordinary residents, as they were amazed to learn how long this problem has existed. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- It has been that way for almost a year under the National Democratic Party (NDP) and no one has taken action. The situation exists whereby the mail boxes located inside the old Post Office in Road Town can only be accessed in the day unless one walks with a flashlight at nights.

For the past year plus, the lights directly over the mail boxes have not been working, therefore it denies the public with mail boxes in that area from getting to their letter boxes, along with creating a security risk.

Lack of lights a security concern

The security risk is posed because of the dark area at the Road Town Post Office. There is an adjacent area where other letter boxes are located where one can hide out if they wished to commit a crime.

Up to last night, March 8, 2015 our news room paid a visit to the old Post Office located across from the Sir Oliver Georges Plaza but the unfortunate situation remains the same. While it appears that some lights were replaced in the hallway leading to the mail boxes they are not enough to allow the many mail box customers to see their mail boxes due to severe darkness because of lack of working lights.

It is this news site’s understanding that many complaints have been lodged with Post Office Personnel along with the Ministry of Finance, under whose profile the Postal Services falls.

It also remains unclear why for almost a year the Government of the day has not addressed this vexing dilemma.

Officials contacted

Post Master General Ms Pascha ‘Pinky’ Stoutt, when contacted by Virgin Islands News Online, claimed she was “not allowed to speak to the media”.

However, Financial Secretary Mr Neil M. Smith said he was not aware of the lights situation at the post office but promised to have the situation addressed tomorrow, March 10, 2015.

Many critics of the NDP Administration claim that this is yet another example of where the Government is not paying attention to the small things that affect the ordinary residents, as they were amazed to learn how long this problem has existed.

One senior civil servant who spoke to our news room, on condition of anonymity, said “I am sure over the past year at least one or two elected officials would have gone there in the night to check their mail box and would have observed the lack of lights to see to check one’s mail box…but it shows they do not care about us.”

The officer, who said she has one more year before retirement, decries the situation saying “it’s a crying shame that they cannot even change a light bulb.”

This could easily be remedied with "motion lights" that way, the lights are not on continuously just when someone is accessing their mailbox. This is also a safety hazard!

In 2015. Why the head of a department cannot speak to the media? Something is wrong with that in a so-called Democratic society IMO. That needs fixing like yesterday.

This is not a big deal, all post offices no matter where do close at a certain hour. You must collect your mail before the PO closes, why should the BVI be different.

This is one of the anchors of old main st much like the prison which plans to draw tourists. The post office is an historic important building (which helps tell the story of BVI) but I can't help but think that not fixing it- even with lights- is basically "demolition by neglect", meaning they can tear it down because "it is too expensive to preserve". It may be a plan. I personally think the building should house the main library with satellites at other locations. But the building has to be preserved. And that means keeping it safe so vandals don't ruin it. Bulbs?? really??

The minister is responsible for cancelled trips to STT, now they must go change light bulbs. Might as well the NDP fire all department heads and run everything themselves

The $20 late fee the Post Office is charging for Post Box renewal could remedy this problem

It is a physical security issue. For the health and safety and convenience of patrons the area should be well lighted. If access to mail boxes is available 24/7/365, providing proper lighting is a requirement and a level of service need. Furthermore, it is a cost of doing business and should be built in to the cost of doing business.

Moreover, providing lighting is a simple facility management requirement. Assuming that the light fixture are working, it is a simple matter of relamping. If the fixtures are not operational, fix them.

That place has no lights for a while and is now you all want lights hmmmmmmmmm I guess somebody will blame NDP for this. The point is that place needs light asap. The community of road town should raise funds for this but I know some people will not agree to this just saying.
