No independence without honesty, pride & respect- Donald E. de Castro
de Castro also does not believe this generation of political leaders have what it takes to lead the territory to independence.
“The way this government and past government behave, it’s a known fact that the majority of people when they hit rock bottom they try to make a fresh start and move back to the top but apparently our governments, every time they hit bottom, they tend to dig the hole deeper,” Mr de Castro said on his radio show, Straight Talk, on ZBVI 780 AM on August 10, 2016.
The veteran social activist said persons interested in getting involved in politics and wanting to lead the Virgin Islands need to first learn the importance of honesty, pride, and respect.
“We need to let the young generation understand the importance of independence and the importance of honesty, pride, and respect for others and themselves and the territory…this will help us to have a good discussion on moving forward. Because as long as we cannot develop more respect for ourselves and each other. If we don’t understand the importance of honesty and trust worthiness, we will have a very hard time getting this territory back on the right track.
“These things are important because if we just jump into independence and we don’t have these qualities and all our concern is going to be money, money and material things, we are going to wind up just like the rest of the other countries or even worse. We don’t need to go backwards we need to go forward,” Mr de Castro stated.
Start talking about independence
According to him, the public should start taking about independence and understand what it is all about.
“And if the premier decides to have meetings and get the conversation going, where it is four years late in my estimation, it will be a good start…not going independent but talking about independence so that we can understand what we need to take up the mantle for independence. It is not an easy road but it is one we will have to travel one day.”
de Castro also said he hopes that if the VI ever goes independent that it will still have some kind of close relationship with the United Kingdom.
He ended his conversation on the topic by reiterating that the territory needs a couple of years to know about independence and fully understand it before making any decision on it.
