No fear of God? Carrot Bay Methodist Church broken into!
Reports reaching Virgin Islands News Online at the weekend state that the Carrot Bay Methodist Church was broken into sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, October 10, 2015.
It is not yet clear if anything was stolen.
Confirmation of the break and entry was received from First District Representative Honourable Andrew A. Fahie and Public Relations Officer of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) Ms Diane Drayton.
According to Drayton, police received an official report of break and entry at the church on Saturday morning. She could not say, however, whether anything was taken.
Meanwhile, Hon Fahie, who is said to be a lead organist at the church, acknowledged having heard of the incident but said he only had second hand information and could not say if anything was stolen.
Upsurge in burglaries
On September 25, 2015 the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force issued a press release in which it asked homeowners to be vigilant in securing windows, especially those out of public view, in light of a recent upsurge in burglaries.
“After record lows in most crime categories but particularly burglaries for the first and second quarter of this year, there has been a dramatic rise in the last two weeks with multiple residential burglaries mainly in the Long Bush, Lower Estate and Jose Hill areas. An apartment building in the West End area was also the scene of a double burglary. Jewelry and cash were the main items taken. A number of playstations were also reported missing,” the press release had stated.
As a result of this upsurge, the RVIPF said it was increasing patrols in neighbourhoods around the territory. Simultaneously, residents were asked to be on the lookout for suspicious persons or persons walking around with tools used to pry open windows or doors and gain entry to homes.
‘Struggling economy no excuse’
Member of the Opposition, Hon Fahie seized the opportunity when contacted to impress on the importance of developing the territory’s youth and that a unified effort is needed.
“In general, I will state that it is going to take all hands on deck to nurture and develop our people, especially our youth, to stay on the right track and fulfill their God given purpose for existing.”
Hon Fahie added that in any struggling economy there seems to be a correlation with a rise in crime. “While this cannot be used as an excuse to do illegal acts it cannot be discounted as a contributor to the rise in crime anywhere.”
According to the former Minister for Education, the first stage of lessons in discipline and respect for law and order should start in each home. “All other efforts should complement such efforts. As a society it is clear that we have to get back to basics in that area.”
“As an elected official who is limited in some respects on the Opposition, I will still play my part and play my part well in helping my people, especially the youth, to keep laser focused on their positive tomorrow by making good choices today. However, at the end of the day everyone is still accountable for the consequences of their choices,” said the First District Representative.
