No Delta variant found in samples sent to CARPHA- Dr Ronald E. Georges

- said VI’s COVID-19 explosion can be traced to mass gatherings & lack of adherence to protocols

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After the Virgin Islands experienced a COVID-19 outbreak where cases surged to over 1600 and a number of COVID-19 related deaths were recorded, many had come to the conclusion that the Delta variant or some other highly contagious strain had reached the territory’s shores.

So far; however, there is no confirmation of the Delta variant being present in the territory as tests on samples conducted at the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) labs in Trinidad have tested negative for the dreaded variant.

No 'variants of concern'

This is according to Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronald E. Georges during a live update on July 23, 2021.

“There is a lot of talk about Delta variants and all sorts of Greek letters of variants, so we sent samples off to CARPHA in Trinidad, we continue to send samples to CARPHA in Trinidad on a weekly basis.

“So the results came back and they did not identify any variants of concern,” Dr Georges disclosed.

Delta (B.1.617.2) is a sublineage of B.1.617, which was first detected in India. According to research, Delta spreads more easily and may lead to more severe disease for unvaccinated people.

VI has B.1.623 variant

Dr Georges said; however, that the samples sent to CARPHA did reveal that the VI has the B.1.623 variant of coronavirus, which is “basically not a variant of concern.”

According to the Acting CMO, the COVID-19 “explosion” can be attributed to the many mass gatherings, including graduations and parties, which occurred two weeks before the upsurge.

“And just from the pictures from social media we are quite aware that there was not a lot of mask-wearing, there was not a lot of social distancing and not a lot of handwashing…

“During that time we were able to have sufficient contacts with persons to cause this explosion of cases in the BVI without a new variant. So we can’t blame a new variant, we have to blame ourselves,” Dr Georges said as he called for responsible behaviour and strict adherence to public health measures.

“How we get out of here is again by strict adherence to public health measures,” the Acting CMO stated.

So we have all these cases and so many deaths right now and it isn't even the worst strain of covid?

Lord help us for when the delta variant does reach. Get vaccinated while you still have your life.

Don't know about you but this is actually very scary, if it was regular COVID that caused this much damage in the BVI over the last few weeks, imagine when the Delta does hit!
Please talk to your doctor and take his/her advice and not the social media advice on this subject; you trusted your doctor's advice in the past right? Why stop now?
Realize it is a numbers game, the more people infected, the more likely it is to get to our vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors and then it's too late. So don't only vaccinate but follow all health protocols. I know we are all tired of this way of living but ignoring it or rebelling against it does not change it. Live in reality and do what must be done.

Hi Doc, i know you are doing your work highly profesional but please do not ley no politiciantake you off focus. You told us why we had that spreqd of covid 19 is because of different activities we had on the island but remember for months we had no cade or cases so let me request of you that you would advise the goverment to stop focusing on cruise ship passangers and focus on people lives ny not allowing vaccinated persons to ealk home no longer where as unvaccinated ones have to be quarantine because that is what brings us to where we are.

Good news! Country is nearly prepared when the delta does pass through the country because it’s more easily transmitted than Covid.

This post isn't meant to be disrespectful but look at the people pushing the vaccine. Seriously LOOK at the people pushing this vaccine look at their girth their size their habits WE KNOW THESE PEOPLE WILL NOT CHANGE THEIR DIETS SLOTHFULNESS and EXERCISE? EXERCISE!? SHite not happening and we know this. People its not complicated if you don't have preexisting conditions.

When we breathe, the carbon monoxide we exhale is turned back to oxygen by the trees plants etc. then we inhale the fresh air right? So when you wear a mask tight to your face all day even when you secluded by yourself how much of that poisonous carbon monoxide you inhaling back into your respiratory system? Stoooopids

This was disproved, months ago. In normal times, who wears those masks the most? Doctors and nurses and some of them wear them the whole day, depending on what procedures they are doing. And, they do just fine.

The Delta was confirmed in the USVI this week. Now we must tighten restrictions on them, like they did to us.

Delta was also confirmed this week in Antigua. So Gaston Browne can mind his business and focus on that. We should put restrictions on Antigua too.

Somebody needs to tell the absolute truth about the Covid demon. Too many mixed information being shared. For starters, the Health officials need to publish statistics of all vaccine usage of the BVI in the past fifty plus years and the negative impact on persons. Furthermore, statistics of all diseases should be made public. Trust is a key factor.

How did it get here in the first place? That is the million dollar question and why we cannot trust the system. School children say it came via fully vax from 15th June as they did not have to quarantine or test. They have since corrected that to require testing on arrival. Still no quarantine and second test! We playing with fire.
