No clean sheet for DeHoo, but a share of the points!
The game itself, a scrappy affair with two evenly matched clubs looking to secure a place in the top four, was Wolues Keeper, Will DeHoo’s last between the sticks as after 10 years in the VI he will soon be relocating to Miami and although his final 90 game probably won’t last long in his memory, overall he said that he has thoroughly enjoyed his time here.
“It’s been lovely to play here, it’s great that everybody comes out to watch and I have really enjoyed playing in the Caribbean with a fantastic bunch of lads.”
The two clubs have played each other numerous times this season and familiarity clearly breeds contempt with five yellow cards and two reds along with referee Eldon Williams coming in for flak from both sets of players as he fought to maintain order and keep the game flowing on a slippery waterlogged pitch.
Omar Martin scored an excellent opener for VG with a well directed header from a corner, with DeHoo the first to admit he should have done better with an attempted save, but was partially blocked by defender Alex Jarvis.
The goal which came in the 23rd minute came against the run of play as the Wolues started the brighter. Several chances went begging, notably to Anthony Spencer who missed two golden opportunities, Tom Bridgwater, who had a scrambled shot just wide, Matthew Moss who saw his header flash past the post and Matthew Plimmer whose curled effort was inches wide.
The Wolues though, battled away after going behind and were rewarded with an equalizer on 44 minutes when Boyd Van Koijk latched onto a superb through ball from Matthew Plimmer to beat the hesitating goalkeeper and fire home.
After the break, neither team seemed willing to press home for the winner in case of leaving too many gaps at the back and play deteriorated with both teams blaming decisions from the officials going the wrong way.
“We are a little disappointed not to have got all 3 points,” commented VG’s Coach, Lennon Audain. “The referee seemed against us, but it was a good game still. We have two (games) to go and still finish in the top four.”
The Wolues clearly the more upset with a goal being disallowed for offside and Van Koijk being booked (which later resulted in a sending off for a second bookable offense) for stepping off the field of play for a sip of water. Joel Williams also got his marching orders during the second half and in the end nothing could break the stalemate.
A draw and a share of the points was not the result DeHoo was looking for, but with James Shearman reportedly heading back and with two games still to play, the Wolues might just have done enough to secure a top four finish and a place in the season ending finale.
“We were hoping for more than a point, we created a few chances, but one all, so be it,” concluded DeHoo.
