VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI– While touting health and education as two major pillars of society, Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) said the people still remain the primary asset of any country.

Hon Fahie made the remarks in a speech delivered at the handing over of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre- Secondary Division in Valley, Virgin Gorda on Friday, September 17, 2021.

According to the Premier, “Throughout the history of these Virgin Islands, no administration as a brand has focused more on its people than the Virgin Islands Party governments.”

Since the VIP Government took office in February 2019, it has focused on empowering its people and giving them opportunities for development, including scholarships for studies and placing qualified locals in high-level positions that have mostly been occupied by expatriates, including from the United Kingdom.

Hon Fahie said it was the Virgin Islands Party government, under the leadership of the late H. Lavity Stoutt, that there was championing of education for the people to ensure a robust education system is available in the territory and where all had access to secondary level education.

Education a priority under VIP - Premier

He further said it was under the VIP that H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) was established and highlighted that the Bregado Flax Educational Centre was established under Premier Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP).

Premier Fahie underscored that an educational institution on the sister of VG brought a lot of relief to many who had to leave the island to attend school on Tortola.

“This is one of the main reasons why the value of education is so embedded in us as a group, as a government, and our whole history and legacy of governments with the VIP,” Hon Fahie said.

The Premier sad even today, many of the VIP’s legislators were former educators, including himself, and that he has a commitment to his party’s obligation to the education sector.

Following its election to office in 2019, one of the first things the VIP government did was to repair the hurricane-damaged Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) L-Shaped Building, which was renamed L. Adorothy Turnbull Building.

This allowed for the junior high students to return to a more comfortable and secure location, with more learning hours.

And after a three-year halt that started under the National Democratic Party (NDP) government, 32 persons were awarded government scholarships to universities overseas in 2020.

Most of what I read that you have said are basically true, but are you sure, Premier A Fahie that there are not plenty of more things that you should say, and you have failed to say that you should, in reference to the many problems that we are faced with? You have given us a partial summary of past VIP leaders legacy. Don't you know that it is more important to us where we are now, progressly speaking, than where we were, and where we hope to go? Mister Premier, we are presently as turtles wrapped in a net of our own weaving, because of our own greediness against each other. No amount of political charm talk by you and others can alter this fact, because of extreme practica greediness by political leaders and others etc., against our best interest. This and others are the core reason for the CoI probing of political snakery in the British Virgin Islands. It is time that you and others to stop pretending that you are naive to this, and some others unacceptable facts that have caused great disparity among our citizens wellbeing.
Where there is lack of good inclusive vision, there are many divisions. Where there are divisions,.there is chaos. Where there is chaos, there are wars. Where there are wars, many soldiers, civilians, and sometimes leaders do perish. To avoid such, good governance is vital to help in keeping the peace, not a job for the RVIPF only, but a Job for all the community members.

Your post is too long, badly set out, poorly argued and incoherent. Could you please try again?

It is time for us as residents of this territory to wake up and smell the roses. For too long the residents of this territory have been depending on the government for handouts and do not try to emancipate themselves. Their priorities need to be re-evaluated in order for the paradigm to be shifted. Furthermore, there are too many selfish individuals who focus on themselves and let the communities in which they suffer. We should assist each other as in the days of old when we live in unity and celebrate with others when they are successful. Let us wait when the British quote and quote takes over as some people are advocating, then we will see fireworks. There will be no need for house slaves. The Premier and his government will not be the only one to be pressured. ALL of us will feel the heat from the fire.

Where are the civic minded individuals who can assist to mold the minds of our young people from going a stray. If we fold our arms and stand aside there will not be any change. They are looking to the government to provide scholarship for the children, assist to bury the dead in their families, assist to repair their homes, repairs to the roads and the list goes on. When it comes to purchase vehicles and go to the salons for make-up they could find money. In this difficult economic situation, I think our focus should be on empowering our children by providing them with sound education so that they can become employable not only locally but abroad. Time will tell.
