‘NHI will cause some people to lose hundreds of thousands’ – E.G. Maduro
Maduro, host of his own oftentimes controversial EGM Show on Thursday nights on ZROD 103.7 FM, was a caller into the Speak Out BVI show hosted by Doug Wheatley and heard on ZBVI 780 am on Tuesday October 20, 2015.
He had called in to correct statements by another caller who gave the impression that the group of which Maduro was part – the NHI Concerned Citizens and Residents Group – was out to stop the NHI from going ahead.
That group on October 13, 2015 presented Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith with a petition seeking to have the NHI taken back to the drawing board to address issues that the group has clearly set out as problematic and in need of attention.
“Our petition to Government is not to stop the NHI but to correct the NHI,” Maduro said. “A lot of people who have life insurance coupled with healthcare insurance will lose hundreds of thousands,” he said.
Maduro expressed the hope that the efforts of the group “on behalf of the people” are taken seriously.
He explained that depending on the type of insurance policy, sometimes a policyholder may have to wait 10, 15, or 20 years for the policy to mature.
“If this thing (NHI) goes into place exactly as it is, a lot of people are going lose [up to $100,000] because they will have to drop that to deal with this mandatory,” he said.
Host of the show Doug Wheatley added to the points that Maduro made, saying that it should not be mandatory for the people who already have insurance that they are comfortable with but should be an option for them to join the NHI should they consider it prudent to do so.
“According to the statistics, it appears to be about 62 percent of the population who has insurance and they should not automatically lose their insurance because of Government’s action,” said Wheatley.

Don’t kid yourself the main focus of NHI would be to keep persons from going off island for treatment. If you have been to the hospital you would know that we are not ready to treat all of our sick here in the BVI. The sensible thing to do is to give NHI to those who cannot afford private insurance. Furthermore if you include everyone in NHI it could run the country bankrupt so if you call bankruptcy progress then you need to go to the hospital for treatment.
