‘NHI will cause some people to lose hundreds of thousands’ – E.G. Maduro

- calls on Premier Smith to take the NHI Concerned Citizens & Residents Group seriously
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Talk show host Edmund G. Maduro is of the opinion that some people who have their private health insurance policies stand to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars should they have to discontinue these policies to make way for the mandatory National Health Insurance (NHI), slated to come into force on January 1, 2016.

Maduro, host of his own oftentimes controversial EGM Show on Thursday nights on ZROD 103.7 FM, was a caller into the Speak Out BVI show hosted by Doug Wheatley and heard on ZBVI 780 am on Tuesday October 20, 2015.

He had called in to correct statements by another caller who gave the impression that the group of which Maduro was part – the NHI Concerned Citizens and Residents Group – was out to stop the NHI from going ahead.

That group on October 13, 2015 presented Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith with a petition seeking to have the NHI taken back to the drawing board to address issues that the group has clearly set out as problematic and in need of attention.

“Our petition to Government is not to stop the NHI but to correct the NHI,” Maduro said. “A lot of people who have life insurance coupled with healthcare insurance will lose hundreds of thousands,” he said.

Maduro expressed the hope that the efforts of the group “on behalf of the people” are taken seriously.

He explained that depending on the type of insurance policy, sometimes a policyholder may have to wait 10, 15, or 20 years for the policy to mature.

“If this thing (NHI) goes into place exactly as it is, a lot of people are going lose [up to $100,000] because they will have to drop that to deal with this mandatory,” he said.

Host of the show Doug Wheatley added to the points that Maduro made, saying that it should not be mandatory for the people who already have insurance that they are comfortable with but should be an option for them to join the NHI should they consider it prudent to do so.

“According to the statistics, it appears to be about 62 percent of the population who has insurance and they should not automatically lose their insurance because of Government’s action,” said Wheatley.

Edmund Edmund Edmund .... I will be paying Colonial and not be SEVERLY sick for the rest of my life til i die, and STILL NOT GET BACK A DIME from them !!!!! So I'm not sad that I'll be "loosing" out on my Policy. These Insurances around here DONT give a yearly cash back or nothing (In the event that you're not sick) -- NOTHING !!!! So you will be with Colonial,Nagico etc for the rest of your life, and STILL loose out !!!!! So no biggie here !!!! My biggest concern was will NHI being accepted in Eureka, and IT IS, So I'm good !!! Thats all that matters to me right now..... swift Service ... out within 40 mins.... not 3+ hours like Hospital... the extra few $$ paid to Eureka wont brokes me !!!! I rather be happy than disgruntled!!!! *Smiles*

@Lily ann. My dear Mr. Maduro is talking about your life insurance policy which is attached to your health insurance. Anytime you or your employer allows your policy to be cancelled you will lose this benefit as well. Also one of the biggest misconceptions about insurance is that it is an investment and you should get something back if you don’t get sick. Remember just like NHI, private insurance is a pool of healthy and sick people who pay each other’s bills when they arise. You receive benefits only when you suffer a loss. You may be healthy now but sickness can come at any time in your life and it helps to have proper coverage when this happens. NHI would not guarantee you treatment overseas if your case cannot be treated here and the options overseas are not the best I can assure you.

@WIZE UP. NHI in its current form is not progress. It stops people with insurance who are in the majority from going overseas to use their insurance and also from using their own doctor for doctors which they can get the cheapest rate but not the quality of service as your private insurance company would provide you.
Don’t kid yourself the main focus of NHI would be to keep persons from going off island for treatment. If you have been to the hospital you would know that we are not ready to treat all of our sick here in the BVI. The sensible thing to do is to give NHI to those who cannot afford private insurance. Furthermore if you include everyone in NHI it could run the country bankrupt so if you call bankruptcy progress then you need to go to the hospital for treatment.

@ conscience: I agree that NHI should NOT be mandatory, I have 2 Million dollars worth of insurance for me and the family for the past 10 year: the progess i am speaking about is NHI allows some persons in our territory get some form of insurence coverage; such was not arround in the past(progress)... As with anything things changes can be made so that it works more efficient.....

@wizeup: I agree everyone should have insurance but you should not penalize those with private insurance from using their coverage. Also only a govt can instigate an insurance plan not the insurance companies. While I applaud their efforts their motive is not to help those without insurance but to keep most of the population within the healthcare confines of this territory and use it as an investment mechanism for the investment club and the doctors within its membership. How do you feel with your private insurance that you have to seek approval from the NHI board to go overseas for treatment with a doctor that is currently not a part of your own network or of which he or she is not familiar with your medical history. Also see my point above concerning how NHI in its current state can bankrupt the country. The report given by the insurance companies describes this in detail and the losses in that report will go higher with liability from malpractice and breach of confidentiality. I hope this provides you clarity.

NHI is simply a scheme for the government to generate money to operate the hospital: if you look at the ratio of persons paying in relation to those using the service you will see: just a ruff estimate out of every 100 persons pay in to NHI 3 or 4 of those persons may seek medical treatment..... Insurance is a money making scheme ( most of us been paying insurance on our vehicles year after after year and don't have any accidents)
