ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Firefighters based at the Road Town Fire station have been charged to go above and beyond, following the completion of the new facilities at the headquarters on Tortola.

Firefights important to VI community - Premier

He said given the value of firefighters to the VI community at large, the damage to their RT base of operations as a result of the hurricanes of 2017, was a tragedy that needed to be remedied.

Since taking office, Premier Fahie said the VIP Government has made it a high priority to complete the project.

“We were compelled to have it repaired professionally and expeditiously as possible. As we took office, fast-tracked this project to ensure that the building was not only restored but that important improvements were made to the existing structure,” he said.

Hon Fahie thanked Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), and his team for the works done to repair the building as well as the construction company who completed the works.

In early March 2021, Metro Construction Ltd was awarded a contract of $322,206.73 to renovate the ground floor of the Fire Station with works commencing on March 22, 2021.

The ground floor of the building houses the barracks that serve the community, where both the male and female barracks were renovated to ensure these officers have a comfortable working environment.

Renovations completed to ground floor

The station’s ground floor also houses equipment, apparatuses, and material that support firefighting.  That space was also renovated to ensure the storage of critical equipment and apparatuses are in a suitable environment.

Premier Andrew A. Fahie also express thanks to God for being able to complete the project, he said having the facilities completed improves the officers' morale and the effectiveness of the station’s operations.

Other renovations were also done to the bathroom facilities and the station’s command centre.

We have Billions of dollars worth of properties in the country and no proper trucks to deal with a small fire when it happens.
We need to know who getting paid under the table for the so called fire trucks that cost hundreds of thousands and only lasting less than 3 years?
COI? maybe we can get some answers in there..

Four years after the devastation? This is nothing to be celebrated. It is something to be repented. Thanks to the committed officers who bore the inconvenience in fulfillment of their service.

I do not want to imagine the state of the Virgin Islands without VIP. Who forget how we suffered after Irma and Maria. Most times when we stand in line to get items that were donated we were insulted and most of the food stayed there and spoil all we were hearing from NDP cronies is you all go help yourselves. VIP is in for a little over two years they are doing things that NDP should have done and also dealing with the pandemic. VIP did not have us stand in line for food, food was delivered to us at our homes. That is a Government who is for everybody. Thank you VIP for keeping us safe despite dealing with a COI.

Date of hurricane: 6 September 2017
Date of contract: early March 2021
Approx time elapsed between hurricane and signing contract: 42 months
Date of completion of contract: Mid October 2021
Approx time to complete work: 6 months.

Question: For a highly essential service like this what is there to shout about. Shame.

Good to see it renovated. I was one of the electrician who wired it 1990 when it was been built. So to stay home antigua and hear this am elated.
