Newly formed cycling club BVI Riderz hosting first event on Sunday

WEST END, Tortola, VI- With a view to fostering a vibrant cycling community within the Virgin Islands, the BVI Riderz Cycling Club was recently formed. The club is also striving to promote health, wellness, and camaraderie through the shared passion of cycling.

According to the President of BVI Riderz Cycling Club, Calvin K. Smith, the mission is built upon a foundation of safety, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility, creating opportunities for cyclists of all levels to connect, improve, and explore the beauty of the Virgin Islands.

“To achieve our mission, we are committed to organising regular group rides and events that cater to diverse skill levels and interests; Providing cycling education and training programs to enhance skills and promote safe cycling practices; Advocating for improved cycling infrastructure and cyclist rights within the BVI; and Partnering with local organisations and businesses to support community initiatives and cycling-related projects; and Promoting the BVI as a premier cycling destination through events and tourism initiatives.”

The Executive Members of the Club include Gareth Thomas - Vice President; Shadé Blackman- Secretary; Tammy David- Marketing Manager; Kisha Frett- Accountant; and Von Alphonso - Public Relations.

Highway Challenge 2026

The club has planned its first cycling event- Highway Challenge 2026- for Sunday, March 1, 2026, at West End, Tortola.

The event, sanctioned by the BVI Cycling Federation, will have events for children from ages below 7 to Under 18, as well as races for adult cyclists.

Some $2000.00 in cash and prizes will be up for grabs.

Highway Challenge 2026 pedals off at 7:00 AM. The course is from West End to Cox Heath and return, with the start/finish line being in front of the Benjamin Romney Park in West End.

A Meet & Greet/ Registration is set for 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Bamboushay Lounge on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
