New Initiatives for Virgin Islands unveiled
The organisation is excited to introduce three new projects: Roots and Branches: Plant a Tree for the Future, the Recyclables Art District Competition, and a new scenic Look Out for locals and tourists alike.
The Anegada beautification project focuses on revitalizing the Graveyard in the Settlement with the generous sponsorship from Unite BVI, all the materials needed for the painting has been procured.
Additionally, Mr. Doug Reigels has kindly agreed to replace the damaged picket fence, using treated lumber to ensure its durability. Once the fence is ready, we will announce the project commencement date.
We warmly invite the entire Anegada community and all interested in community development to join us in this endeavor.
Hon. Lorna G. Smith, OBE, Territorial At-Large Representative, expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am thankful to Unite BVI and Mr. Doug Reigels for their financial support in helping us transform the cemetery into a beautiful space where members of the community can pay respects to departed family members and friends.”
The Roots to Branches: Plant a Tree for the Future initiative aims to engage communities in reforesting areas impacted by recent hurricanes, including Tropical Storm Ernesto. We are partnering with Hon. Karl Dawson, First District Representative, to plant ornamentals that prevent soil erosion and beautify District One.
Hon. Karl Dawson remarked, “I fully support the Roots to Resilience: Together We Thrive Programme, and the Roots and Branches project complements the beautification efforts already underway in District One.”
The Recyclables Art Competition and Silent Auction, launching soon, will encourage sustainable waste management practices by showcasing creative uses of recyclables.
This district-wide competition will feature student and adult categories, culminating in a December reveal.
Hon. Smith commented, “Our BVI community members are incredibly creative, and I eagerly await the unique art pieces each District will present.”
To further foster community pride and appreciation for the Virgin Islands' natural beauty, we are developing a scenic Lookout.
We aim to create a safe, environmentally friendly, and attractive space for residents and tourists to enjoy our stunning vistas while learning about the site's cultural and historical significance.
Hon. Lorna G. Smith, OBE, stated, "This initiative aims to inspire community pride and offer an elevated experience for both residents and tourists. We hope that others would follow suit taking advantage of some of the most spectacular vistas in the world."
Earlier in 2025, the Roots to Resilience: Together We Thrive Programme successfully implemented the Paint the Town Community Beautification Project in East End Long Look and the Cultural Dialect and Slang Project during the Seniors Month celebrations.
The Roots to Resilience: Together We Thrive Programme, an initiative by Hon. Lorna G. Smith, OBE, is dedicated to fostering community development and resilience.
Remember, "Beauty is by Nature. Clean is by Choice." We invite residents of all ages to join us in our efforts to enhance the Virgin Islands.
Participate in the District Art Recyclable Competition, help transform the Anegada Gravesite into a beautiful park, and support District One's conservation and beautification initiatives.
Together, let's transform our Virgin Islands communities
