JOHN’S HOLE, Tortola, VI- District 5 Representative and Minister for Communications and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer, has said the reopening of the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre is meaningful to him.

The Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre, located in John’s Hole, had to be rebuilt following the destructive hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

Speaking during the official Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on October 13, 2025, Hon Rymer said, “This reopening is meaningful to me because it touched my family…my nephew attended this school for ten years.”

He said that while his sister and nephew relocated to the United States of America for further assistance for his nephew, his achievements are rooted in his time at the centre.

“Today,  can proudly say that he has graduated, he’s a bit more calmer, he’s a bit more understanding, and I know this facility will facilitate the students that need that additional help.”

His nephew, he said, remembered his past teachers and principal when they spoke recently. Hon Rymer said his nephew wanted them to be acknowledged for his time at this school.

“So it’s a testament to how important these facilities are.”

To the parents, I recognise you

Hon Rymer, who also revealed he grew up with an uncle who has special needs, took time out to recognise the parents.

“I recognise you. I know it is not an easy task raising a child with special needs.”

Hon Rymer expressed being proud that the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre, the first of its kind purpose-built special education centre in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), is located in his district.

“We trust that this renewed facility provides the learning environment that meets the needs and learning styles of the differently abled in our community.”

According to the Minister, this new facility does not just represent classrooms but possibilities, "where children with different needs receive the tailored support to thrive.”

The new structure has four classrooms, two exterior learning spaces, a sensory room, a therapy room, a media room, a multipurpose hall, a hygiene room, a nurse’s station and quiet areas for reflection in the rain and sensory garden.

I hate signage where there should be no need but we live in a land of ignorance and entitled people.

Minister none of the children parks in the BVI functional where to take our kids to play. All the other Caribbean countries moving forward for the last 8 years this count is the thing of the past .Just by the roads , bushes, etc.

Let them play at home, in the back/front yard or read a book. We didnt have any parks to play when I was growing up.
