VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- The Department of Waste Management (DWM) has opened a new dumping zone and access road at the Virgin Gorda Dumpsite to improve safety and provide easier access for vehicles transporting waste to the facility.

According to DWM, in a press release, the newly constructed haul road features a gentler slope, providing a safer route for heavy vehicles carrying loads into the dumping zone. The improvement, DWM said, is designed to reduce the risk of vehicles losing control while descending into the site.

The new dumping zone also features a wide level platform, allowing drivers sufficient space to unload materials, turn around and exit safely.

'Safety first'- Brian A. Davis

Director of the Department of Waste Management, Mr Brian A. Davis, said the improvements are intended to create a safer environment for drivers, employees and other persons using the facility.

“The safety of everyone who uses our site comes first. The new haul road gives loaded trucks a gentler, more controlled way down to the dumping zone, and the flat platform gives drivers room to tip and turn around safely,” Mr Davis said.

The Department is advising all drivers to use the new haul road and dumping zone and to follow the directions of the site supervisor.

Drivers are also reminded to use low gear when descending, reduce speed when approaching bends and avoid overtaking. Vehicles must be positioned on level ground with the brakes secured before unloading, and tipping beds must be fully lowered before moving, DWM advised.

The new dumping zone will accommodate construction and demolition rubble, concrete, soil and fill, and green waste.

Waste not accepted

DWM said bulk metal, tyres, batteries, oil, household garbage, chemicals, hazardous waste and medical waste will not be accepted at the new zone. These materials must be taken to the appropriate designated areas of the site.

To assist drivers in navigating the new route, the Department has produced a short instructional video featuring drone footage of the haul road and dumping zone. The video provides guidance on accessing the facility, safe unloading procedures, accepted materials and operating hours.

The Virgin Gorda Dumpsite operates Monday to Friday from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Saturday from 6:00 AM to 12:00 noon, and Sunday from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
