JERUSALEM- Benjamin Netanyahu's record 12-year run as Israel's prime minister ended on Sunday, June 13, 2021, with parliament approving a new "government of change" led by nationalist Naftali Bennett.

According to Reuters, it is an improbable scenario few Israelis could have imagined.

Netanyahu, whom Israeli politics have revolved for a decade, will now become opposition leader.

Bennett, a right-wing former Netanyahu protege, will lead the most ideologically diverse government in Israeli history.

Narrowest margin of victory

The final vote was 60-59 with one abstention, the smallest possible majority for the new government.

US President Joseph R. Biden spoke by phone with Bennett shortly after the vote and said he looked forward to working with the new government. Bennett thanked Biden for his support of Israel during the last operation in Gaza and said he is a great friend of Israel, Bennett’s office said.

According to Axios, Netanyahu used his last speech as prime minister to denounce President Biden's Iran policies and claim that Bennett would be too weak to stand up to Washington.

As Bennett spoke, Netanyahu allies repeatedly interrupted him.

Meanwhile, under a coalition deal, Bennett and Yair Lapid will both hold vetos on the government's policies, and Lapid will rotate in as prime minister after two years.

No man is invincible. Sooner or latter changes take hold. I hope that the new goverment will do a better job than the former outstead Prime Minister that for the past 13 yrs. did, God being its guide and strength.

Benjamin, good riddance. Treat the Palestines as dogs, subhuman and slaves. The solution to the problem is a two-state solution, if peace is going to be attained.

That seems a bit harsh - I agree that many Palestinians are terrorists and/or terrorists sympathisers but even those don’t deserve to be treated like dogs, sub/humane or slaves. Shame on you! If they bomb, then bomb back tenfold - eventually they will learn their lesson.

Bennett is way more extreme than Netanyahu. I don't expect things will improve for the Palestinian people.

If they stopped sending rockets into Israel then the Israelis would not need to retaliate. I hope that the news leader keeps up the good work.

Yea keep telling yourself that. Those people need a status why deny it. Looking at the history of Africa, European leaders love to draw up lines on a map and dictate who gets what, this creates a new caste system. France apologized for the results of this behavior recently.

Imagine if you will that the UK set up a blockade around the BVI and stopped necessary supplies getting through. The people just going to lie down and take it? You take a dog and abuse it and starve it and beat it, you cannot be surprised when it tries to bite back
