Negative blogs display a certain lack of maturity in society- Natalio Wheatley

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Radio talk show host and member of the People’s Patriotic Alliance (PPA) Natalio Wheatley has called on bloggers to desist from making negative comments but rather focus on making positive contributions to issues that would foster healthy discussion and goodwill.

According to Wheatley, who was speaking on the radio show Umoja last evening January 19, 2012, negative blogging is indicative of a “certain lack of maturity” in society.

“When I see those negative comments on the online news it displays a certain lack of maturity we have in our society. I am not saying that it is the majority of people who do it but I would certainly like to see a situation where people, even those reading the comments, who go and put positive comments, when you disagree do so politely and with love because we want our brothers and sisters to go in the right direction.

Meanwhile, regular host of the talk show, Cromwell Smith called on the media to use its power to inform the people and unite them for the upliftment of the Territory.

“ I would like to go a little further and ask those online media houses and all the media houses in the Territory to join with us and understand what we are trying to do and use that power, that media power, not to harm our people, not to keep them in ignorance, not to keep them divided, not to keep them in hostility but to move us forward and get us to see the importance of these things and the way we need to think in order for us to be successful as a country. I think they have a major role to play in the advancement and development of the minds of the people of the territory.”

“Brothers and sisters it would be such a great contribution when there is an issue online, or an issue anywhere, to make a contribution to the issue where all of us can benefit, whether you agree or you disagree on the issue.”

Mr. Smith further said that persons views may differ on a particular subject but it was important that the views be shared but in an amicable manner. “Out of all these consideration of views will come the best ideas to advance the country but when you read a comment that simply attacks a person’s personal views or call names or try to vilify another brother and sister you really not making any contribution to the discussion and what you are doing is creating division and hostility, which is negative to the country, negative for us as a people and negative for our advancement.”

I agree with Natalio. We have to be concerned with this issue. If we don't care, our tourism WILL suffer!

I agree to a point, but Natalio all I have to say is, you have your platform to contribute, this is our platform to vent. It has been long coming and now here where we can say exactly how we feel without the threat of being ridiculed and unemployed. No one tells you how to use your platform, you shouldn't tell us how to use ours. Albeit some of us do same some real stupid things, take the good with the bad. We all have enough common sense to ignore and smirk at the bad comments and analize the constructive comments. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out, and if you think for one minute that by you coming on and saying what you said, that will change the minds of some of us who insist on being ignorant, think again.

This is the type of ignorance in society that we are trying to avoid. Instead of making constructive comments people are reverting to child like behaviour with all their negativity. Words of wisdom to all the negative bloggers, grow up, get a life and get a valid opinion instead of commenting on an intellectual situation that you clearly know nothing about.

The man is saying that stupid comments that make sensible people look stupid shouldn't be the only thing noted on these online news site. So blog away but those who doesn't not believe in ignance is "ignance" should also voice how they feel.

My goodness. His point is proven indeed. I couldn't agree with Wheatley more. A lot of the bloggers are indeed exhibit a lot of immaturity.

YFreedom of speech is one of basic tenet of our democracy. It is what differentiate us from people in China, Vietnam, Cuba, North Korea, Iran among others. But we are not totally free to express our opinions. Some speech has consequences. For example, we cannot and should not either slander or libel others. Moreover, do we ever wonder why bloggers including me afraid to use our real name? The truth is we live ina fish bowl and what we say can have tire consequences. The blogger, as well as family members, can and will be retaliated against. Blogging is therapeutic. And it provides a forum, a medium for many more citizens to participate and contribute to discussions. Not everyone has access to talkshow forum to express their opinions. Online blogging provides ready access to express bone's view. We may not always agree with one another's opinion but we should respect each others opinion. Diversity of opinion is healthy. Civil discourse is is also healthy and ideal. But it is personal choice for all of us. Let the bloggers blog! everyone has talkshow and other forum to express their opinions. Online blogs provide the opportunity and ease to do so. We may not always one anothers

This is a democratic society, let the people speak their mind. Stop trying to censure how people feel. Everything cannot be sugar coated. If the people are feeling hurt, betrayed and angry let them voice how they feel. If they are happy, let them voice how they feel.
